DSS ON THE PROWL: A DETAILED ACCOUNT OF CHIDO ONUMAH'S EXPERIENCE

The State Security Service (SSS), also known as the Department of State Services (DSS) is primarily responsible for intelligence gathering within Nigeria.
It is a department in the presidency. It was created by the Ibrahim Babagida government in 1986 when the National Security Organisation NSO was dissolved to form the State Security Service (SSS), National Intelligence Agency NIA, responsible for external intelligence and
counterintelligence and Defence Intelligence Agency DIA, responsible for military-related intelligence outside and inside Nigeria.
The mission of the SSS is to protect and defend the Federal Republic of Nigeria against domestic threats, to uphold and enforce criminal laws.
The SSS is also charged with the protection of the President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives and state governors. It also provides security for visiting foreign heads of state and government.
Recently the DSS arrested Chido Onumah at the international wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja,for wearing a shirt with the inscription "We Are All Biafrans". In this interview he gives a detailed account of his experience.
Dr Onumah is a journalist, author & rights activist.
He holds a PhD in Communication and Journalism from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain. He is the coordinator of the African Centre for Media & Information Literacy (AFRICMIL).
