🚨#BREAKING: We've secured a settlement requiring Power Design—a major electrical contractor—to pay $2.75 million to resolve #WageTheft & #WorkerMisclassification case. OAG holds employers accountable when they deny workers wages & benefits they’ve earned: bit.ly/36Y3xGv
We alleged Power Design misclassified 500+ workers as independent contractors instead of employees to cut costs and avoid legal responsibilities, like paying overtime & taxes.
This settlement is OAG’s largest #WageTheft recovery both in value & the number of affected workers.
As part of the settlement, Power Design is required to:
âś…Pay nearly $880K in back wages to workers
âś…Pay $1.8 million to DC
âś…Pay $50K to support apprenticeships, job training, or workforce development programs in DC
âś…Implement measures to comply with DC worker protections
OAG has made protecting workers a priority.
In 2017, we worked w/ @councilofdc to obtain independent authority to investigate and bring #wagetheft cases.
We've launched 30+ investigations and recovered millions of dollars from businesses that have stolen wages from DC workers.
@councilofdc Workers who have experienced #wagetheft or other wage and hour violations can contact OAG by phone at: (202) 727-3400.
