BIG news at #SCOTUS about the #LittleSisters needs a Friday wrap up. The Little Sisters are back at the Supreme Court? Bear with me (thread):
This case is related to, but different from the one @BECKETlaw won in 2016. Back then we were defending the Little Sisters from a federal mandate that forced them to provide abortion causing drugs and services. They won that fight. (2/7)
After their win, the federal government gave them a religious exemption. American history is rich in examples where people of good faith disagree and exemptions are necessary to protect people from having to violate their deeply held beliefs. (3/7)
In this case, the state of Pennsylvania, among others, sued to take that hard-earned exemption away. And they went further, arguing that the exemption violates the Establishment Clause, an argument that could endanger ALL religious exemptions. (4/7)
California's case (with 13 more states) against the #LittleSisters has not yet been appealed, but you can expect that to happen in the coming weeks. This is bigger than just one state out to get the Little Sisters and one of many reasons why #SCOTUS has agreed to weigh in. (5/7)
There is no reason for these states to keep pushing last decade’s culture wars. Governments don’t need nuns to give out abortion drugs. The Court can now end this once and for all. (6/7)
The Little Sisters and countless good ministries around the country do invaluable work. Yesterday we celebrated #ReligiousFreedom and we're days from celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In our American tradition of freedom, join me in asking PA to #LetThemServe
