Just in: It has been half a year since the Yuen Long July 21 mob attack. Eight victims have today decided to sue the police commissioner for the police force’s negligence and their alleged collusion with local triad groups. #HongKongProtests #antiELAB
One of the victims, pro-democracy lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting, says in a press conference that the July 21 attck was a “watershed in Hong Kong’s history” because it revealed the “dark relations” between the police and triads. #HongKongProtests #antiELAB
Lam also says that the Yuen Long Police Station had been noticed about the scheme two days prior to the attack, but it had done nothing to prevent the attack from taking place. #HongKongProstests #antiELAB
Another victims says he felt “frightened” when he heard one of the police representatives Kong Wing-cheung told the media that #antiELAB protesters had incited the attack at the beginning, which resembles pro-Beijing activists’ rhetoric. #HongKongProtests #antiELAB
Trying to wiping her tears, this lady says she feels “upset” when she has to recount the incident. She adds that on July 21, she saw young people protecting her at the metro station while children and old people were frightened by the perpetrators. #HongKongProtests #antiELAB
At the same time, local broadcaster TVB has just revealed that the police’s anti-triad unit arrested 186 people over the past two weeks in Yuen Long. However, it is not immediately clear if the arrests were made due to the mob attack that took place on July 21. #HongKongProtests
Lam Cheuk-ting hopes by suing the police commissioner, more facts can be revealed during the proceedings. “I hopes we could push the higher echelon of the police force, police commanders and other people can openly address the public via an open court,” he says. #HongKongProtests
