#LIVE: It is Hong Kong’s historic moment. As police raise this flag indicating protesters could be arrested for secession/subversion under the new national security law, the city is experiencing a new era where speech can be criminalised/even sentenced for life. #HongKongProtests Image
#BREAKING: A man was found having a “Hong Kong independence” flag in his bag as being stopped and searched by the police in Causeway Bay. He’s become the first person arrested for violating the new national security law since it was enacted for about 14 hours. #HongKongProstests Image
Protesters march despite knowing the protest is illegal. Some raise a banner that reads: “We really f_ucking love Hong Kong.” In some part of the crowd, protesters have clearly refrained from chanting slogans suggesting Hong Kong independence. But some chant so more vigouroisly. Image

#BREAKING: China’s parliament have unanimously passed to impose the new national security law that is believed to further muzzles freedoms among Hong Kong people. So far, no clause has been revealed to the public. #HongKongProstests
At the same time, pro-democracy activists, including @joshuawongcf and @chowtingagnes, have announced to opt out of @demosisto, the political party their co-founded in wake of such a legislation. The resignations didn’t come unexpected, but still surprising.
Pro-independence group, Hong Kong National Front, also has said on social media that it will disband its base in Hong Kong and shift its operation abroad, the first local political group jettisoning Hong Kong to evade the security law inserted by Beijing to Hong Kong.

A replica of the Venus de Milo statue has been put on display on the street. No one is here to explain the idea of the art piece. But Venus de Milo is a symbol of western civilisation. And it is now blindfold by red tape representing the Communist Party. #HongKongProtests Image
The police have deployed at least five rounds of tear gas as soon as protesters have started to occupy roads in Causeway Bay. It seems they have done so in order to stop the protest from flaring out. #HongKongProtests #antiELAB

Just in: It has been half a year since the Yuen Long July 21 mob attack. Eight victims have today decided to sue the police commissioner for the police force’s negligence and their alleged collusion with local triad groups. #HongKongProtests #antiELAB
One of the victims, pro-democracy lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting, says in a press conference that the July 21 attck was a “watershed in Hong Kong’s history” because it revealed the “dark relations” between the police and triads. #HongKongProtests #antiELAB Image
Lam also says that the Yuen Long Police Station had been noticed about the scheme two days prior to the attack, but it had done nothing to prevent the attack from taking place. #HongKongProstests #antiELAB Image

Statement Simon Cheng posted on Facebook reveals a more haunting truth. He confirmed he was caught at the West Kowloon Highspeed Rail Station, a grey area that law systems in HK & China overlap. It’s the 1st known case of Chinese agents enacting laws on HK soil. #HongKongProtests Image
Mr Cheng added in his statement he was isolated from his family although Chinese agents claimed they had. This has also become reportedly common in Hong Kong: #antiELAB arrestees would be denied from reaching out to their families and legal aid. #HongKongProtests Image
For long, the legal system in China has been chastised as being opaque and flawed as it is part of the Chinese executive branch. Critics say the law is used in China for purges. This testimony shows once again how Chinese legal system is prone to manipulation. #HongKongProstests Image

The UK govn is set to award #Huawei access to it’s 5G network. This will be a mistake of epic proportions and is based on a complete inability to understand what Huawei is and the motivation of the CCP.

My piece in @foreignpolicy today:

foreignpolicy.com/2019/11/04/joh…

1/12
The UK govn claims Huawei is ahead in 5G tech than any other company and it would be limited to only the nonessential parts of UK comms.

The fundamental problem with Huawei is that it is not a regular company as we understand them. EVERYTHING it does goes back to Beijing

2/12
ALL Chinese companies MUST defer to govn narratives (see ##Taiwan and Tibet)— and if the West hadn’t understood that dynamic, look at what is happening in #Xinjiang.

But the recent #NBA scandal in US should have been a serious wake up call for things to come

#CarrieLam will begin to deliver the policy address in less than 30 minutes. She’s stated she will focus on housing and land issue, and wants the storm in #HongKong to end.

#CarrieLam plans to announce a HK$2bn subsidy to install electric car parking facilities in private estates. Happy to hear for the environment, but the public is much keener to hear what she has to say about other topics...
