I promised myself I’d finish the advance copy of @MarkJaccard book “The Citizen’s Guid to Climate Success” before it went on sale. It’s on sale today & I finished it over breakfast. If you care about #climateaction it’s an excellent read, no matter your background. #cdnpoli 1/

@MarkJaccard He craftily dismantles both common tropes & the false promise of silver bullets that, he rightly notes, serve as barriers to progress—whether delivered by well-intentioned advocates or incumbents intent on delaying any real action. 2/

@MarkJaccard Bonus points for his use of political cartoons & quotes from the likes of George Orwell, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Upton Sinclair, which probably dropped the word count down significantly. A piercing quote & whip smart satirical art are worth 1,000s of words. 3/

@MarkJaccard I encourage you to read the whole book, but the last chapter alone is worth the price of admission. For those with an engineering minds, the bullshit detecting flowchart for evaluating the climate sincerity of political leaders is spot on. 4/

@MarkJaccard As somebody who has worked as an advocate for clean energy & #climatesolutions for nearly 2 decades, I fully endorse his rejection of rigidity about solutions. “We must pay attention to technical, economic, political, and social feasibility, and be willing to shift…” 5/

@MarkJaccard “...our preference for a particular action or policy if one of these factors presents an insurmountable barrier to its contribution.” In short: all too often, perfect is the enemy of good. Rapid incrementalism beats leaps that never happen. Every day of the week. 6/

@MarkJaccard His articulation of why he engaged in civil disobedience in 2012, blocking a coal train & landing himself in jail, his post hoc reflections & explanation for why he chose not to block the TMX pipeline expansion neatly summarizes action informed by his “climate sincerity” test. 7/

@MarkJaccard Inspired by @daveregrets & his support for @leahstokes new book - if $25 is a barrier for you, drop me a DM. I’ll buy up to 4 copies for folks, on condition you read it then pass it on (& keep passing it on). 8/

@MarkJaccard @daveregrets @leahstokes Run to your local bookstore & grab a copy or 10 (or online if you must amazon.ca/Citizens-Guide…). Buy them for friends, family, your elected reps (all levels of gov’t). Spread the word.
Thanks, @MarkJaccard for yet another important contribution to #climateaction in #cdnpoli 9/9
