#BREAKING: Today I'm suing a major DC landlord—responsible for nearly 1,000 apartments—for illegal #discrimination against low-income District residents who receive housing assistance: bit.ly/2UTRoPN
#civilrights
There is a severe affordable housing crisis in DC and many vulnerable residents rely on housing assistance to afford a place to live.
Yet despite strong #civilrights protections in the District, a recent study showed that 15% of DC landlords still refuse to accept vouchers.
We allege the companies violated DC law by:
❌Targeting housing voucher recipients with added fees
❌Rejecting rapid re-housing applicants
❌Falsely claiming to follow fair housing laws and misrepresenting security deposit policies
❌Subverting DC's rent control laws
With support from @councilofdc, OAG launched its #CivilRights Section in 2019 to ensure equal treatment and meaningful opportunity for every DC resident.
During OAG’s Civil Rights Listening Sessions last summer, residents flagged #housingdiscrimination as a top concern.
@councilofdc Mark your calendars: On February 19, OAG will testify before the @councilofdc on its pending legislation to reinforce the office’s enforcement authority regarding the Human Rights Act.
@councilofdc If DC residents experience #discrimination of ANY kind, report it to OAG by calling 202-727-3400 or emailing OAGCivilRights@dc.gov.
