TUNE IN: OAG's Performance Oversight Hearing before the @councilofdc's Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety: bit.ly/2SrjLD7
@councilofdc LIVE NOW: I'm testifying before the @councilofdc for OAG's Performance Oversight Hearing: bit.ly/2SrjLD7
@councilofdc In recent remarks, U.S. Attorney General Barr denounced reform-minded prosecutors nationwide who are driving new evidence-based approaches to criminal justice that build community trust and promote public safety.
This attack is straight out of the failed tough-on-crime playbook.
Today, I joined 39 elected prosecutors in telling AG Barr why data-driven criminal justice reforms can reduce crime and produce better outcomes for everyone: bit.ly/37vkO9y
@miriamkrinsky This reporting period, OAG returned $15+ million to consumers and DC's coffers in addition to saving taxpayers $426+ million in claims against the District.
With a budget of $74 million, it's clear that investment in OAG has resulted in strong returns for the District.
@miriamkrinsky OAG also launched its #CivilRights Section to ensure equal treatment for every DC resident.
So far we've:
✅Hosted Civil Rights Listening Sessions to hear resident concerns
✅Filed several lawsuits to stop housing discrimination
✅Intro'd important civil rights legislation
@miriamkrinsky Next week on February 19, OAG will testify before the @councilofdc on its pending legislation that it introduced a year ago to reinforce the office’s enforcement authority regarding the Human Rights Act.
@miriamkrinsky @councilofdc If DC residents experience #discrimination of any kind, report it to OAG by calling 202-727-3400 or emailing OAGCivilRights@dc.gov.
Residents can also file a complaint with @DCHumanRights at bit.ly/2SzqWrS
@miriamkrinsky @councilofdc @DCHumanRights Thanks to @councilofdc, we also have the resources needed to defend workers and punish companies that cheat.
Recently, OAG secured its largest #wagetheft settlement requiring Power Design—a major electrical contractor—to pay $2.75 million to harmed workers and the District.
@miriamkrinsky @councilofdc @DCHumanRights Workers who have experienced #wagetheft or other wage and hour violations can contact OAG by phone at: (202) 727-3400.
Workers can also learn more about their rights under District law at: oag.dc.gov/wagerights
@miriamkrinsky @councilofdc @DCHumanRights OAG continues to leverage investments from the @councilofdc to fight elder financial exploitation, including:
✅Conviction against a home health aide who stole money from client w/ dementia
✅18-count indictment against bankers alleged to have stolen $80K+ from an elderly client
@miriamkrinsky @councilofdc @DCHumanRights If you suspect an older adult is being exploited, contact OAG at (202) 727-3400 or ElderAbuse@dc.gov.

@miriamkrinsky @councilofdc @DCHumanRights Our office has also been busy working to protect DC consumers.
We've sued:
✅Facebook for not protecting the data of more than 340K DC users.
✅Marriott for unlawful bait-and-switch advertising
✅JUUL for failing to warn teens and consumers about harmful effects of e-cigarettes
@miriamkrinsky @councilofdc @DCHumanRights Last year, OAG expanded its data-driven #CuretheStreets violence interruption program that treats violence like a disease and works to interrupt it, treat it, and stop it from spreading.

@miriamkrinsky @councilofdc @DCHumanRights Today's testimony is only a small fraction of the work our office does year-round to help DC residents and promote the public interest.
