The #Crew96 Supporter Summit is tonight. Believe this is the 7th (?) time I’ve emceed the event, and man have we been through some highs and lows. Being told in 2018 that there was realistically nothing we could do to save the team, obviously the lowest point. Turned out okay.
I remember one Supporter Summit when Robert Warzycha promised to sell his jacket (YES THAT JACKET) to me, which he never did. Broken promises, obviously. #Obviously
That was the year when Don Garber was actually in attendance. After I asked Bobby to sell me his jacket, Lamacchia asked Garber why they didn’t make cool shit for us. Don said, well because you don’t buy it. Chris is like, that’s because it doesn’t exist. Checkmate.
One year McCullers and Josh Williams we’re sitting up front during the Q&A session, and someone asked Josh (not Mark) if the Nordecke could have #SMOAK. He just shrugged his shoulders and said “light em up.” The place erupted in applause.
Of course there was the 5 year long love fest between Gregg Berhalter and Shrek. Seriously, those two just respected the absolute HELL out of each others questions and answers. It was a little sickening, to be honest. Gonna have to get those chairs dry cleaned, you guys. Jesus.
The real heroes of the event, of course, are the members of the #Crew96 FO who coordinate everything. They’re always like “oh this is your event, you guys tell us what to do”, but they’re the ones doing the heavy lifting. They never take any credit, but they deserve most of it.
Also, I have a ton of respect for the SG leaders, the banner painters, the volunteers, and everyone else who gets up in front of 150-300 people and talks about how everyone can get more involved, how we can be more inclusive. It’s an important message.
Not everyone loves public speaking. In fact, I’ve been told that most people do NOT enjoy it. It’s like some of you “people” don’t demand to be the center of attention at all times. LOOK AT ME, LAUGH AT MY JOKES, TELL ME YOU’RE PROUD OF ME DADDY, you’ll never say. You disgust me.
But no, seriously, it’s hard to talk about stuff into a microphone. Anthony Precourt still can’t figure out how they even work. Do I put it in my lap until I need to cough, and then use it? All Crew fans who care enough to talk into microphones in front of others are my people.
For those asking, the RSVP link for tonight’s event is no longer live. We’re limited to the capacity of the event space, and it always fills up quickly. When we start holding this thing at the new stadium in 2022, I’m sure we’ll be able to accommodate more people. Sorry, friends.
