I wonder whether @NiAolainF would agree with this inflammatory interpretation of her UN report (full text here ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/…). /1
The only direct reference I could see to #Prevent in her report appears to commend it for its focus on human rights /2
The report however hits out in a number of directions, and these comments in particular on the “whole of society approach” might be seen as critical of the UK /3
Where trust is vital and the consequences for peace and cohesion are so high, loose words can be dangerous. /4
The abstract, no-names approach of these UN reports is standard form. But unless it is pursued with painstaking balance and appreciation of the public interest in countering the various ideologies that are inimical to human rights, damaging smears and uncertainties can result. /5
The Rapporteur is however on firm legal ground when criticising the use of coercive laws based on the over-broad concept of “extremism” - as in Russia but I hope never in theUK. My own thoughts on that are here daqc.co.uk/2019/03/20/ext…. /6 ends
Discuss! @CommissionCE @miqdaad @WillBaldet @NatCoordPrevent @JBrokenshire @NiAolainF and thanks for your comment @lizziedearden
