How can schools help prevent exclusions? For our new report ‘Pinball Kids: preventing school exclusions’, we visited schools leading the way in including all pupils: [Thread] #PinballKids #edutwitter #inspiring thersa.org/discover/publi…
.@carr_manor in Leeds, staff (teachers and non-teachers) are ‘coaches’ for about 10 students each. Sitting in circles at the start, end, and middle of the week, this more relaxed approach helps build trusting relationships.
.@FermainAcademy is an alternative provision free school for 13-16 years olds excluded from mainstream school where staff & student areas are mixed. There’s no teachers’ common room: students relax in the same space. This helps young people with emotional problems feel connected.
.@TowersSchool employ ‘Welfare Managers’ – non-teaching staff responsible for the wellbeing of a year group. They meet with students weekly & are on hand during break time.
.@PassmoresAc puts inclusion at the centre, with an ‘Inclusion Hub’ in the middle of the school. This provides extra support for students, including catch-up primary school teaching.
.@CoopLeeds has its own alternative provision, called ‘Frank’s Place’. It’s a short distance away from the main school site but follows the same uniform & behavior rules - “you still feel as if you’re in the school” said one student.
Risedale Sports & Community College is located on a military garrison, serving many military families. It assess all incoming students for special needs, including emotional support, during the 2-week transition period.
.@liverpool_hope tries not to manage behaviour, but understand the root causes – with all staff receiving training on ‘attachment theory’, to understand how trauma shapes student’s reactions, & support from a counsellor.
We believe strong relationships between students + families & teachers or other school staff are at the hear of reducing exclusions. Find out more by reading the report: thersa.org/discover/publi…
