1. Yes I got the permission of the people in this photo to publish the photo.

I asked the young man (left): Why are you out, since there are guidelines in place?"

He said "I'm not threatened by the coronavirus. I've got a pretty good immune system. I live with young people."

2. "Oh you live together?"

"No, we just met."

Oh. Dread filled my heart.

"You live in an apartment building?"

"I live in barracks."

OH.

3. The young woman (right) lived with her brother in Virginia. Fortunately now there are stay at home orders in DC, MD, VA, and we need them nationwide.

The family behind the couple? They had traveled from Pennsylvania for a day trip across state borders.

4. Some conservative pundits demand I remove the photo. Why? So we can turn a blind eye to the reality of a nation that is defying the "Guidelines"?

Are we also going to deny the cries of doctors & nurses that they need reprieve?

5. They say that I am engaging in shaming. Well, we should be ashamed as a nation.

Arrogance, hubris, deniers, truthers on this pandemic have made it so we have doctors and nurses wearing trash bags for protection & dying as they try to save patients. That is shameful.

6. All for what? A utopia where we die on the sword of our public freedoms? I love America. And her freedoms. But I will not stand silent as our healthcare workers risk their lives because we make the situation worse with our community spread & our selfishness.

7. Do the people going out have bad intentions? Absolutely not. But as @orlipeter explains in my piece: In the neurobiology of threat assessment not everyone processes threat appropriately. The appropriate response now to a global, invisible threat is "overreacting."

Some people don’t want you to see this photo or read my @JewishJournal appeal to @realDonaldTrump to #lockdownAmerica. This is not about public shaming. It’s about public health, stopping spread, giving doctors, nurses a reprieve. Ratio me. Or save lives.
