In these testing times, Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA), Telangana has focused its efforts in addressing the loss of livelihood opportunities in complete lockdown for breaking the infectious chain of global pandemic of COVID-19.
It is relentlessly enabling Self Help Groups (SHGs) to contribute to the battle against Corona.
Taking up alternative livelihood to earn income during lockdown has been a focus area. MEPMA is utilising SHGs for building awareness in the community, training & facilitating them.
MEPMA is also helping Area Level Federations in producing reusable masks as per GoI standards.
With these efforts, 118 ULBs of the State have engaged their respective SHGs to respond to the outbreak of COVID-19 by being a part of the solution & earning some income in turn.
Necessary arrangements have been made by the Municipal Commissioners to buy these masks.
MEPMA is helping SHGs in getting orders from other government departments, NGOs & private companies. Till date, 1200 SHGs skilled in tailoring have made 10,55,000 reusable masks.
Sanitization is ensured while stitching, packing & handover of the masks. The SHG members ensure social distancing among themselves while stitching. These masks are distributed to sanitation workers, street vendors, health workers, municipalities employees & citizens.
While the requirement of masks are expected to rise further, SHGs will continue producing and cater to the demand while earning their livelihood. Further, some masks are being distributed for free to the urban poor.
I highly applaud these efforts of our SHGs & the authorities of MEPMA-Telangana, who are facilitating these arrangements.
