Let’s talk about Tricia.

Tricia’s travel agency business in Lagos is temporarily closed down due to the #COVID19 crisis and no single revenue has been earned since the beginning of March.

She has an issue with her employees. Your opinion is required.

In her travel agency business in Lagos, she has 11 employees - 1 Manager, 1 Operations Supervisor (manages the travel booking software), 7 Sales Executives, 1 Driver & 1 Office Assistant.

As a “nice person”, she paid her 11 employees their full salaries for March. In April, she borrowed funds to pay 50% of the salaries to all employees.

However, the manager wrote her an email (on behalf of all 10 others who were copied on the email except the driver and office assistant) to threaten her to pay the April balance since her other food delivery business (in Abuja) is working and making money.

Tricia called me to ask for my opinion. What should she do?

I asked her what she needed from me truly. Does she want a psychological uplift to justify her socialist behaviour that has just gone bad. Or she wants to take a business decision.

For me, the decision on this one should be very easy - at least for 8 of the 11 employees.

The manager that sent the threat email without any sense of responsibility, plus the 7 sales executives that were paid one and a half (1.5) months salaries without bringing any sales, and yet had the courage to be the major brains behind the threat email.

Tricia said her dad shared the same view point as my position.

She has gone ahead to terminate the employment of the 8 people and appointed Amaka, the Operations Supervisor, as the new acting Manager.

Amaka came to apologize for the incident and acknowledge that the sales team started the complaints and convinced her and the Manager. Tricia accepted her apologies 🤷🏽‍♂️.

Fast forward to 9 days later.

Amaka called Tricia. She got a deal to arrange a chartered flight for 43 expatriate employees of an American company back to the US once the flight restriction is relaxed. Client has paid. This Amaka doesn’t disappoint.

What do you think about how she handled the 8 employees? Wait ooo, should she bring them back to the company? What’s your take?
