"A lot of us are still in shock and still trying to process what SCOTUS decided. This was a huge win but we have to keep in mind that this is nothing permanent." - Juana Guzman, RAICES Texas Community Organizer
"The core of the decision is that no one is disputing that the Trump Admin has authority to end DACA. The question was: in what manner can it be terminated.
SCOTUS decided that the memo in 2017 that rescinded DACA was insufficient to comply with the law." - Manoj Govindaiah
"In many ways this decision is a roadmap to how the government can properly end #DACA. But ultimately, the decision was that the way they did it now was wrong. The key is that they can try to end DACA. This isn't over." - Manoj Govindaiah, RAICES Litigation Director.
What does this decision mean for current #DACA recipients?
- You are eligible to renew. It's important that you do so.
- Check with an attorney if you make a decision to travel with advance parole.
What about the folks who hadn't applied to #DACA but were eligible?
- The decision doesn't address this directly.
- However, nothing prevents someone from applying to DACA for the first time. Eligibility has not changed.
"If the Trump Admin cared about DACA recipients, it would have passed legislation in Congress instead of ending DACA and using it as a bargaining chip." - @ErikaAndiola
"It's important to remember we are part of a much larger undocumented community & that we're also targeted through ICE & police collaborations. Our fights are intrinsically connected. We must use this time to continue to stand in solidarity w/ #DefundingThePolice." - Juana Guzman
On using the "Dreamer" label:
"We definitely need the media to get updated w/our current DACA folks. We're still being called 'kids.' I'm 32 years old. We're older. We have a lot of different experiences. We need to push our distinct narratives." - @ErikaAndiola
"This narrative is harming us more than it's helping. We share many things but we each have our own stories. We're also coming to understand what criminalization is & that supremacy decides who is a criminal & who isn't." - Juana Guzman, Texas Community Organizer
"It's important we continue to join with others to push for human dignity & that the immigrant rights movement understand the intersectionality between criminalization of Black & POC folks and the immigration system." - Juana Guzman, Community Organizer
🔥 #DefundThePolice
Will folks have to wait for guidance to send new #DACA applications? "
"We don't see anything that prevents you from applying. Go ahead and follow the directions on the USCIS website and apply."
