Why today is a great day - but it's not nearly enough & we have to keep pushing.
A thread 🧵on the future of #DACA and the immigrants rights movement 👇🏾
After years of relentless attacks on immigrants, today’s Supreme Court decision is a much-needed win for our community. It’s a win for the organizers, advocates and #DACA recipients who fought so hard for this over so many administrations.
But it's only a partial win.
We have to keep in mind that the SCOTUS ruling is nothing permanent.
The way in which the program was terminated was wrong but the Trump Admin still has authority to revoke #DACA.
In many ways this decision is a roadmap to how the government can properly end program next time.
So #DACA lives - for now.
But let's remember this doesn’t change anything about who’s inside the White House.
Despite 70% of the public supporting DACA recipients, the president is still a racist & will continue to use immigrants to advance his xenophobic & hate-filled agenda.
The Trump Admin is fixated on endangering immigrants & asylum seekers. It's clear that his hate runs deep.
That's why we echo calls for 45 to resign. As long this Administration - filled w/white supremacists - remains in power, our communities will continue to suffer.
It's also important to highlight that the narrative around #DACA has changed. DACAmented folks are older & wiser now & they are part of a much larger undocumented community that is repeatedly targeted through ICE & police collaborations on the daily.
And let's never forget that many #DACA recipients & members of the undocumented community are Black and face a whole set of further challenges within our racist immigration & criminal justice system.
Our fights are intrinsically connected.
And although we must take a moment to breath & express the joy that this decision may bring....
We must also use this time to continue the call to #AbolishICE & stand in solidarity with #DefundingThePolice.
We know that we must continue to march forward towards a vision of liberation and freedom for all.
That's why we will continue to fight for asylum seekers, an end to the Remain in Mexico Policy, to defund the police, and Abolish ICE.
