New thread
IMPORTANT
context missing from original tweet - no link given to original content
I retweeted after seeing it many times on my feed by trusted #leaders of #womeninmedicine
Personally, I just had this done to me (my repost of @techreview = “evidence” of “bullying”)
Women so primed to be on lookout for gender bias - which does genuinely exist - when we see something that matches our expectation of bias
we don’t question 2ndary source
do not go to original source
350+ retweets later
original source drowned out
narrative -> new reality
In fact what is common
is selected screenshots out of context
where labeling may be implied or at the top of a page
screenshots not representative
I trusted sources to have vetted & did not follow rules of #scicomm
(along with 350 others on MedTwitter)
When comparing apples to apples - comments by
faculty
vs
peers
Women called “exceptional” & “award-winning research”
Leaving up original
to provide trail
of #SciComm gaps
This is a good case study
@jackie_parchem happy to connect if of interest

How do we credibly shows biases that do exist?
without being party to spreading poorly labeled misinformation ourselves?
what is responsibility of original poster to label, vet, verify
& link to original source
vs describe with own narrative without primary evidence?
I am still struck by the peer/junior resident description of a woman with “maternal” & “snacks” as compared to this which balances his personal qualities and professional qualities
Even by casual description, still sounds like a leader, not nurturer.

The key distinction being that
leaders get paid and respected
nurturers do not get paid and may not be seen as valid sources of criticism for improvement needs
so subtleties may still be worth assessing

It’s worth still thinking about maternal reference
Freud would have a field day with that as he attributed many forms of mental illness to a disordered relationship with the mother
can be highly complex or even triggering
Is that really context we want to bring into work?
@UTHealthObGyn has all the descriptions so you can read it yourself. It seems pretty balanced once you look at the full set. Differences are subtle at best.
