SOS!! This night ~52 people in distress alerted us from the Maltese SAR zone. We informed authorities immediately. The people escaped from #Libya & are at sea for 2 days. They don't have any food or water left. Weather is worsening, the people need to get rescued immediately!
The ~52 people say that their engine has stopped working and that their boat is drifting. They cannot move on and require help immediately. #Seabird of @seawatch_intl has spotted them from the sky and the merchant vessel TALIA is nearby, we hope they will engage in rescue!
The people are still not rescued! They told us moments ago that they are still in distress at sea, unable to move on as they have run out of fuel. We first alerted authorities over 11 hours ago - why has a Search & Rescue operation not been carried out yet? Do not let them drown!
Where are they? We lost touch with the people in distress in Malta SAR after our last contact at 17:53h. Maltese authorities continue to stay silent. We are very worried about the fate of the 52 people at risk of drowning!
According to the merchant vessel Talia, its crew has carried out a successful rescue operation and taken the 52 people safely on board. We are very relieved! The rescued need to be disembarked as soon as possible in a port of safety in Europe!
