#TodayinHistory in 1892, the #Katipunan, an underground organization with an objective to mount a revolution versus Spain to establish an independent Filipino nation, was formally established in the house of Deodato Arellano, Binondo, Manila. (THREAD)
Context: The Philippines under 3 centuries of Spanish colonial rule has had numerous revolts, varying in degree, motivation, or extent. Most common causes were exploitation, abuse, forced labor, unfair socio-economic conditions.
Many historians say the first great awakening on Filipino nationhood could be traced back to the unjust execution of the 3 secular priests, known collectively as the GOMBURZA.
With the rise of José Rizal and his fellow propagandists who sought to raise the Filipino voice in Spain, awareness of the Filipino condition spread.
On José Rizal's final return in 1892, he would establish La Liga Filipina, the first of its kind in the country. Days later, he would be incarcerated, and then sent into exile in Dapitan, Zamboanga.
Early in January 1892, the Katipunan had already been conceptualized. But upon Rizal's exile, the Katipunan founders deemed it necessary to establish the organization formally. The org would establish chapters in diff. provinces extending up to Visayas. kasaysayan-kkk.info/foundational-d…
The Katipunan sought Rizal's advice while he was in exile in Dapitan, and he willingly gave sound advice to them.
With the premature discovery of the Katipunan in August 1896, an all-out open revolution was planned and mounted. This was the beginning of the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution against Spain, extending up to 1987, with a brief lull, then continuation in 1898.
