#GE2020 A friend asked in a group chat - Do you agree with this statement: "Just vote opposition. Don’t care which one."

I replied - "It's a sad situation when people end up making statements like that. It means we are desperate, perhaps no longer in control." /1

"Or we long for change we know inside may never come, but hold on to the tiniest glimmer of hope that we can make a change." /2

This is what's happened to our country - the oldies and boomers who appreciate the regime, plan and system of old that's brought this fishing village into the space age, and want to keep the status quo for fear of things going bad. /3

The 30-45s with kids and reasonably good jobs who have stuck with the plan who understand both sides because the world has taught them so. They think and care. But also fear change. /4

Lastly, the new young voters who grew up without shackles and were raised by the Internet, who need to validate and qualify before pass judgement and accept. The ones with perhaps no allegiance and no fear. /5

I used the word fear 3 times because that's what is going on. Singaporeans fear change and the ruling party seems to milk this anxiety every time. And I think that's what is most sad about us, that we don't take chances because we do not think we are brave or resilient enough. /6

I sometimes wonder at times like these, when we are asked the difficult questions, where the lion is. /E
