1/ If you are in NY, are affected by public registration, have a loved one who is, or fundamentally oppose registries as a matter of human rights & because they distract from strategies that actually reduce sexual harm - We must join those on the ground & expand our coalitions.
2/ If you find it difficult to understand why this matters, consider this. A full 32% of the NY Corrections Committee agenda today involves bills that demand further restrictions, sanctions & punitive actions towards individuals who are required to register. #endtheregistry
3/Many of these are measures such as residency & proximity restrictions, parental visitation, & internet surveillance. All of these things have huge collateral consequences, do not protect children, infringe on rights & detract from strategies that help reduce sexual harm.
4/ The damage of public registration, like most of the criminal legal system disproportionately affects minority communities & those who lack power and privilege to fight back against racist and classist systems. This should be part of all #cjreform conversations.
5/ Of particular note is the weaponization if the registry as an anti-immigration measure. According to the NY State Division of Criminal Justice Services, almost 4000 people who are required to register have been deported. That is more than in any other county in the state.
END/ Our desire & personal mandates to end sexual harm should not expand the carceral state. Registries are not solutions. There is a wonderful group of people who are organizing in New England to take action. If you are interested in info - DM me. Together we can change things.
