#ICYMI: Epic Games filed a lawsuit against @Apple claiming that Apple is abusing its market position to extract money unfairly from apps (and by extension, from consumers)

They publicly announced their lawsuit yesterday with this video; a remake of Apple’s iconic “1984" ad.
(🧵)

The ad aired nationally once, during the 1984 Superbowl; announcing @Apple’s new Macintosh computer.

What was innovative about the ad was the portrayal that “big brother” controlled the representation of tech.

Some believe this was a message to @IBM.

Most memorable in that commercial was the woman hurling her hammer into the screen, symbolizing @Apple’s disruption of the “powers that be” in tech.

If we fast forward to today; Apple is now perceived as “big brother” and @FortniteGame is trolling them.

“Apple is abusing its position to extract too much money from apps. Those costs are passed onto consumers as higher prices for in-app purchases,” says @JustinBrookman, “Apple probably shouldn't be getting a slice of in-app purchases.”

The basis of the @FortniteGame lawsuit is they don’t believe it's fair that Apple gets a cut of all in-app purchases --- they tried to create a workaround for people to buy directly from Epic Games, but @Apple blocked it.

This lawsuit may have lasting effects on #bigtech.

Consumer Reports and @CRAdvocacy will be keeping a close eye on how it unfolds.
