Welcome to Night 3 of our Legislative Focus week over LGBTQ+ rights here in Missouri. Tonight’s topic will cover Gay-Straight Alliances for our students and implementing Trans-Affirming policies in our schools. Here we go! #ShowMePride #lgbtq

In #moleg in 2020, HB 1565 was filed in an attempt to restrict Gay-Straight Alliances (GSA’s), inclusive LGBTQ curriculum and more.

That bill was stopped, so our school districts can continue to have control in their support for our LGBTQ students.

For the first year this year, a proactive LGBTQ policy was filed. It was an inclusive LGBTQ curriculum bill, so our 6-12 grade students can receive support through GSA’s, and LGBTQ history would be added as a core part of curriculum for all students.

Our school districts have control in regards to Trans-Affirming policies in our schools, through their own interpretation of Title IX.

There are several cases in federal courts nationwide that would strengthen protections for our Trans-students through Title IX.

Another policy that we need here in Missouri goes towards our schools anti-bullying policies. Currently, our school districts cannot explicitly outline protected categories in their anti-bullying policies. This leaves many groups of our Missouri students vulnerable.

As your State Rep., I will strive to bring up this issue with legislators on all sides of the aisle, so we can focus on finding the best possible solutions for our students, families, and schools.
