[1/8] As part of our 2020 ad tracker project, here is a break down of the worst #DogWhistleAd of the week.

[2/8] In NY-11 a battleground district that represents Staten Island, the Congressional Leadership Fund and Nicole Malliotakis (R) both put out TV ads that employ a similar racist dog-whistle to attack @MaxRose4NY.
[3/8] Both ads seek to demonize anti-racist protestors, turning the participants into a dangerous non-white other. Like all dog-whistles, the ads avoid naming race explicitly but frame calls for racial justice as an inherently threatening force.
[4/8] The CLF ad begins by saying “criminals hailed as freedom fighters” with a stock image of a sign-- not from any protest-- that reads “Burn the city down” followed by an animation of a cop car being attacked.
[5/8] The CLF ad continues by attacking @MaxRose4NY for silently participating in a BLM march. The ad flashes clips of peaceful protesters-- most of whom are POC-- while it plays ominous music and portrays the march as dangerous and chaotic.
[6/8] The ad by Malliotakis, released the same day as the CLF ad, has a similar coded racist message. Malliotakis criticizes reforms like ending cash bail, lowering prison populations, and reducing police budgets as “dangerous policies that will destroy OUR city”
[7/8] The ad ends by saying that she wants “YOUR family and mine to be safe.” This coded racism seeks to divide voters without providing real policy solutions.
[8/8] It should be noted that this coded racism is also working off a false characterization of @MaxRose4NY’s stated positions. Rose said “I oppose #DefundThePolice and spoke out against efforts to cut funding.”
