Facebook recently made some announcements in response to demands that the civil rights groups in #StopHateForProfit called for earlier this summer.
It's been a few months, so @ADL has taken a look at how they’ve done in addressing our common sense requests.
Our findings👇
Are ads still running next to hateful content?
The answer is clear: yes.
Not only are they still running, but hatred festers and isn't particularly hard to find. See these few examples below.
Does Facebook still allow large groups and pages that spew racism, antisemitism, hate and conspiracy theories?
Again, the answer is yes.
Facebook still tolerates “Exposing the Rothschilds,” a group with over 130k members and “George Soros: The Enemy Within,” with over 4k.
Does Facebook permit Facebook Groups promoting violence?
Again, the answer is yes.
@ADL repeatedly has brought problematic groups to their attention but time and again, they have ignored our requests and violence has followed.
Does Facebook allow election disinformation and misinformation?
Here the answer is mixed.
It's helpful that Facebook has updated their policy, adding election information labels to posts around voting methods. However many of these posts inexplicably still lack labels.
In a few short years, Facebook has achieved incredible success. It has attained 3B+ users, 8M+ customers and $70B in revenue. By comparison, pushing prejudice off the platform should be easy.
For Mark Zuckerberg, this is a matter of will, not skill.
And if the product is broken and harming users, Facebook should do what all other companies do with a defective product -- recall it, remove it until the problem is solved or retire it altogether.
It’s long overdue for MZ to take down Facebook Groups and fix it once and for all.
In conclusion, considering their resources and reach, Facebook has made too little progress, and hate and racism still run rampant. Election misinformation, groups spewing toxic antisemitism and conspiracy theories are way too easy to find.
Facebook needs to accept its responsibility and shut this stuff down. Now.
There is no excuse. None.
In the meantime, @ADL will keep pushing Facebook to #StopHateForProfit.
