We are horrified by reports that Irwin County Detention Center in GA has been performing nonconsensual mass hysterectomies on detained people in @ICEGov custody.
Coercive sterilization is a human rights violation and perpetrators of these abuses must be held accountable!
The US has a long history of coercive sterilization. Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities and people with disabilities continue to be harmed by these human rights violations, including in detention settings.
Intersecting forms of oppression, including discrimination on the basis of immigration status, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, and primary language make migrants and people seeking asylum more vulnerable to human rights violations.
We KNOW that #reproductiverights violations against migrants, immigrants, and asylum seekers are not limited to this report.
In 2017, @ProjectSouth reported that the same detention center in GA failed to provide prenatal care to pregnant immigrants in their custody: bit.ly/3hvcs6N
Advocates have documented a pattern of egregious abuses targeting pregnant people and women of reproductive age in ICE detention facilities. This has only worsened during #COVID19: bit.ly/35uRfHv
We MUST ensure that all migrants and people seeking asylum are protected from human rights abuses at the hands of the U.S. government.
