🧵The 7 questions I submitted for the White House & HHS Call on #LongCovid (7/15, 4pm EST):

1. Why has public health (e.g. CDC) failed to include a warning of long-term effects of #COVID19 in the recommendations for prevention of infection? How will they be held accountable?
2. This is truly a national/international crisis. Will the White House include #LongCovid in its next public address, press conference, etc? The American public is still largely unaware of the extensive damage and the millions of people experiencing it.
3. Does the White House and HHS support congressional legislation for #LongCovid, including the CARE for Long Covid Act and the TREAT Long Covid Act? If so, how will it make that support known?

🧵 Our current Attorney General, Mark Brnovich, has just waged war against Arizona women and our healthcare providers. Brnovich is falling back to a 100+ year old law, which would imprison doctors and others for providing abortion care.
This cannot stand. This will cause irreparable harm to our families, to our economy, to our businesses and to our healthcare providers. But most of all – this will harm women – and especially those women who already face numerous barriers to equitable healthcare.
As your next Attorney General, I will absolutely not allow the arrest or imprisonment of our reproductive healthcare providers, including doctors, nurses, PAs, midwives, pharmacists or others. This is outrageous.

A tragic consequence of #RoeVWade decision that will harm women:

time to talk CANCER during PREGNANCY.

Without abortion access, women with cancer will have an impossible choice: risk delayed cancer care or severe fetal harm

angry ER doc thread... (1/8)

1,000s of pregnant women each year in the US are diagnosed w cancer. These include breast ca, rectal ca, melanoma.

Treatment may require radiation, chemotherapy. But here's the problem....

radiation & chemo can cause great fetal harm in up to 15%-20% cases

what to do?

imagine: you're a pregnant women, excited to have your 1st child. You receive terrible cancer news. And you are told that you need chemo NOW - or you risk the cancer spreading.

But you are told chemo has a big chance of harming the fetus.

If you live in many states....

A 🧵on Climate & Repro Rights:

Taking away #reproductiverights during the climate crisis era is inhumane & is a DIRECT attack on vulnerable populations as #climatechange impacts such as drought & extreme weather already disproportionately affect women & girls.

Here's how:
1. Women are disproportionately impacted by displacement caused by climate change.

2. Heat stress from rising temperatures or food/resource scarcity increases gender based violence.
3. Changes in the natural environment can worsen maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Increased heat, loss of crops, air/water pollution, drought, and salinated water all impact, either directly or indirectly, the nutrition of a mother and her child.

#AbortionIsADisabilityRightsIssue 🧵: I and my spouse are both Little People and both support abortion rights for everyone, but I want to highlight why access is especially important for us dwarfs. First, there is the issue of “double dominance.”
If 2 people with achondroplasia (“Peter Dinklage” dwarfism) conceive, there is a 25% chance the embryo will receive 2 copies of the gene and be “double dominant,” which is incompatible with life. Carrying such a pregnancy to term can be deeply traumatic and should be a CHOICE.
Further, carrying any pregnancy can be risky for a variety of little people. Often, a dwarf body has a narrow birth canal that makes vaginal delivery life threateningly dangerous, along with many other orthopedic issues that raise serious health risks for pregnant little people.

What does "full spectrum" #ReproductiveRights mean?

A #MothersDay2022 educational thread.

🙅🏽‍♀️ Protect the right not to be pregnant if you don't want to be.

I have a question for #MedTwitter. Yesterday, I saw a large government-focused IG account suggest medical coding for miscarriage should be changed to something other than abortion. The account owner mentioned receiving "so many DMs" from people saying,
"I was devastated to have a miscarriage, and it was like a gut punch to see the word abortion on my medical records." To me, this needs to be solved by eliminating the stigma around abortion. I see this as a societal failure, and it seems like it could be a slippery slope
to suggest changing medical coding for one type of abortion procedure, just because it makes some people feel bad. I responded to the account and said much of this (I didn't talk about it seeming like a slippery slope, yet anyway), and the response I received was:

Today marks the beginning of '40 Days For Life', a US-based, international anti-abortion campaign where intimidation and harassment outside abortion clinics is stepped up for the 40 days of lent...( 🧵)
The clinics they are targetting this year are:

As part of our campaign for national #bufferzone legislation, we are collecting evidence of clinic harassment from across the country and we need YOUR help!

#Ohio: In an attempt to outlaw all abortions, House Bill 480 was introduced on November 2, 2021 to protect "unborn persons," making it the most extreme bill to move through a state's legislature in the recent string of bans popping up across the country.
Other laws like Ohio’s new “Born-Alive Infant Protection Act” are also on the rise to further restrict #reproductiverights and spread “pro-life” ideologies.
On the other side of the aisle, a group of clinic escorts in Toledo work to protect patients and the freedom to access healthcare.

It is unconscionable that today, in 2021, #SCOTUS is poised to wipe away fifty years of women’s empowerment and rights and return to the days when the state could make pregnant people prisoners in their own bodies, forcing them to carry out the wishes of the state. (1/3)
The only reason we are here, where we fear #SCOTUS taking away a constitutional right, is because of the Right’s packing of the Court. If not for such court packing, we would almost certainly not face this very grim reality where abortion access could soon be taken away. (2/3)
The Supreme Court’s credibility is already in peril. Overturning Roe will confirm that this conservative supermajority is driven not by law or precedent, but by a naked partisan agenda. @acslaw

#Tomorrow the Polish Parliament will debate the ‘Stop Abortion’ bill that would establish a TOTAL BAN on abortion in #Poland and criminalize individuals that receive care. #StrajkKobiet
Poland has long had one of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe. It is one of only two EU member states that has not legalized abortion on request or broad grounds.
As attacks on #reproductiverights have intensified in the country, so too have attacks against civil society organizations and women human rights defenders.

#AbortionIsEssential! Today, nearly 10,000 individuals & over 420 organizations urged the U.S. Supreme Court to protect the right to abortion.
This is a historic moment—with an outpouring of support for #reproductiverights from the Biden administration (@POTUS), celebrated professional athletes like Megan Rapinoe (@mpinoe) and literally THOUSANDS of people who have had abortions.
“...Individuals from sports, law, medicine, government, and diverse walks of life are stepping forward to have their voices heard by the Supreme Court." - Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO.

Today, I filed the #RBG Act to remove barriers to accessing abortion care in North Carolina. Our state has the fourth-highest number of restrictions in the country. These barriers serve no medical purpose. Instead, they interfere in decisions about whether & when to have a child.
The #RBG Act will expand access to healthcare, which is especially important during a pandemic. The public health crisis has limited access dramatically at a time when family planning is more important than ever for many people. #ReproductiveRights
As #RBG stated, the decision to have a child is personal. "...when the government controls that decision for her, she is being treated as less than a full adult human responsible for her own choices." We must allow women to make their own decisions, free from interference. #ncpol

🚨New Year, New Paper 🚨

Remember research before #COVID19 - findings from our 3 year study on access to #abortion during #zika in Brazil, El Salvador and Colombia in press now W/ @socscimed
We found that whilst #zika spurred abortion demand amongst individual womxn and global debate on #reproductiverights - the heath emergency didn’t change national regulation or policy change for abortion access.
This was on account of the narrow policy path dependency in #globalhealthsecurity focused on epidemiology which did not consider gendered needs or the broader social effects of epidemics, combined with deeply conservative context + recent political history
