In 2005, CSPAN aired a compilation of RBG's confirmation hearing during the Robert's confirmation hearings and then again during the Harriet Mier's blowup. I was in college but was enraptured. I missed class more than once to watch hours of old footage c-span.org/video/?45747-2…
The entire three days of proceedings are worth watching/listening to, but this ~ 3 hour compilation is masterful. Having been too young to see it in '93, revisiting it in college (when I assumed I’d be going to law school), left an indelible mark. Ij rewatching tonight.
It is perhaps interesting, and notable, that the first exchange in this is of Biden and Ginsburg. Just watch how she answers the question about the framers their intents to craft the Constitution and Bill of Rights as limiting the power of government. Again, masterful.
I’m still watching this and I can’t believe how much if this I so vividly and specifically I recall from my viewing 15 years ago (def. worth skipping class). This is the power or #RBG, I can recall specific moments from CSPAN reruns from 15 years ago (and content 27 years old)
Few jurists — let alone individuals — have that kind of power. Also, watching her handle Strom Thurmond, a man who was diametrically opposed to everything she stood for, if not her mere existence as a person, is fantastic. Thurmond voted for her, incidentally.
Jesse Helms voted nay, but honestly, I bet that was a badge of honor for RBG. Anyway, I’ve always loved how her intellect and humor and RBGness was able to win over even a monster like Thurmond, without him even realizing what she was doing.
