@mrmabatim & I are delighted to have our article 'When disconnected institutions serve connected publics: subnational legislatures and digital public engagement in Nigeria', published in The Journal of Legislative Studies, @tandfonline ed @LordNortonLouth 1/9
We examined the extent to which #Nigeria’s 36 state assemblies leverage active citizen online presence for digital public engagement. @lshaofficial @oyoassembly @adamawaassembly @abiahouse @ondoassembly @ekitistateHA @kwhanigeria @housePlateau @realOSHoA
2/9
We argued that for assemblies to improve their public image, public understanding of their roles, and to be more transparent and inclusive, they must improve digital engagement practices, using tech as enabler of enhanced transparency and inclusiveness.
3/9
Majority of citizens are active online, articulating political conversations on many issues, including the conduct and performance of public institutions and officials. It is only balanced to add the legislature’s voice, through engagement.
4/9
We analysed the content of all subnational parliamentary websites as well as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube accounts through a double coding strategy, and also interviewed officials and legislative aides.
5/9
We show while the assemblies are increasingly present online, usage of online tech for publishing information and engagement is very low. We provide explanations for this, and offer suggestions derived from best practices but situating within contexts.
6/9
We believe that #Nigerian organisations working on legislative institutionalisation/accountability/participation could find this research useful in their advocacies. @BudgITng, @YIAGA, @EiENigeria, @cislacnigeria, @PLACNG, and @CDDWestAfrica.

Similarly, we welcome further engagement with the research: @nilsnigeria, @nassnigeria, @HouseNGR @AfrikParliament, @NGRSenate @CParliament_NG @IPUparliament, @PGAction, @CPA_Secretariat, @WFD_Democracy @GRNPP1

We believe that the Federal @NigeriaGov, the @NGFSecretariat and other stakeholders @toluogunlesi, @NITDANigeria, @FMoCDENigeria @DrIsaPantami could use the research to identify key areas of opportunities in digital engagement by public institutions.
