Tomorrow, in Addis-Ababa, the Peace & Security Council (PSC) of @_AfricanUnion meets in emergency on the situation in Sudan under. Nigeria will chair it. It's the 1st meeting of any policy organ of the #AU on the epochal situation unfolding in Khartoum
dailytrust.com.ng/nigeria-assume…
Sudan matters to the stability of Africa in a way that arguably no other country does. It is a complex, big, fragile country with borders to the most complex & fragile regions of the continent. The potential for regional stability contagion are huge if Sudan is distressed
Sudan is critical to stability in the #Sahel, North Africa, the #GulfOfAden, the #NileBasin, the #GreatLakes, East Africa; the Horn of Africa, Central Africa & #WestAfrica. There's no other #African country whose wellbeing can so ripple through the continent like Sudan.

I’ve seen a lot of commentary to the effect that violence and inconclusive elections in the 2019 cycle is evidence that #Nigeria is witnessing a democratic regression. I understand this feeling, but strongly disagree. #NigeriaDecides #Thread
This narrative is mostly driven by two factors: (1) the sense that 2015 was a watershed because an incumbent lost (this was a big deal!) and (2) the larger number of inconclusive elections in the 2019 cycle.
2015 *was* indeed a watershed. The introduction of the smart card readers made it much harder to manipulate voting outcomes than it had been in the past and helped Buhari unseat the then incumbent. That was a huge deal and a big positive for #Nigeria’s democracy.

Today is #WorldKidneyDay, so here is a thread about living on #dialysis & #OrganDonation. My name is Belinda Otas. I’m #African. I’m #Nigerian. I'm #Benin. I’m #British & I’m #Black. Beyond the nationalities or passports with my name, I also believe in our shared humanity.
I was 16, when I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF.) I had no idea what was happening to me because at the time, it made no sense. However, I remember the pain of that period like noonday. I lived on dialysis until i was 22. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth
It took over my teenage years. I don’t remember having much of a life as a teenager because dialysis was 3x a week & every session was 4hrs. Add the time it takes to recover from being exhausted by the process, my day was pretty much over. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth

Nigeria’s 2019 Election:
What Are We Missing?
Vote buying. Thuggery. Rigged primaries. Logistical
failures. Official misconduct. Ballot box snatching.
Budget delays. Voter apathy. Intimidation. Turnout
suppression. Inconclusive results. Bribed officials
#NigeriaDecides2019
These and many other challenges routinely undermine the credibility and smooth conduct of elections in Nigeria.

Mueller's team needs to fasten their seatbelts. Kaiser lied to Parliament on some key points including her own biography. Mueller questions Cambridge Analytica director Brittany Kaiser theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/f…
Some of Kaiser's lies and misdirections to Parliament: she founded PACE Group, she wasn't an employee, and it's inaccurate to say you were recruited out of a company you own...
PACE seems to have been set up in order to help companies that had corrupt Gaddafi-era contracts with #Libya n state bodies like ODAC to get reinstated after the 2011 revolution whose anniversary is today.

Addressing the annual conference of @NigBarAssoc in Aug, @MBuhari claimed #HumanRights were subject to his own notion of national security. As #Nigerians in different walks pay wth their lives for growing insecurity, it's impt to address #TheBuhariDoctrine
vanguardngr.com/2018/08/rule-o…
Supporters of #TheBuhariDoctrine of national security easily cite the side comment (dictum) of a Justice of #Nigeria's Supreme Court in the case of Mujahid Asari Dokubo v. Federal Republic of #Nigeria decided when OBJ was President on 8 June 2006.

In July 2009, during, under OBJ's successor, #UMYA, Yusuf Mohammed, the founder of #BokoHaram was executed extra-judicially by @PoliceNG. His killing became the proximate cause of an insurgency that has triggered multiple forms of lethal violence in #Nigeria

The conviction of Prof. Richard Akindele for predatory sexual misconduct is a major landmark for #HumanRights of women in #Nigeria. The days after the night before, it's useful to look back at this saga of the #SexForMarks scandal ndtv.com/world-news/sex… via @ndtv
Unknown to many, Prof Richard Akindele was on the final shortlist for appointment to be Vice-Chancellor of a Private University somewhere in SW #Nigeria. But for Ms. Monica Osagie, he cld easily have ended up running a university despite a history of trading #SexForMarks
Many easily forget that when Ms. Monica Osagie blew the whistle on #SexForMarks, she was at the receiving end of some vile abuse. I don't expect the ppl who abused her with no just cause to have the honor to retract now but Ms. Osagie & her counsel, @abiolaak are my sheroes

So, @Fmohnigeria says nearly ⅓ of #Nigerians may have mental illness. To the average #Nigerian, this means we have epidemic of "madness". But this is a measure of both how stressful the country is & how little attention we pay to the things that matter
punchng.com/30-of-nigerian…
#Nigeria's inhumane dysfunctions which contribute to its national epidemic of mental illness are some of the legacies of a ppl unable to recover from the dehumanizing regimentations of prolonged military rule. Worse happens though.... These dysfunctions also cost lives
#Nigeria's dysfunctions do kill- ystrday, 5 graduates of the Law School (4 male & 1 female) preparing to be called to the Bar end of Nov 2018 were killed in a needless & avoidable car crash in Bwari, Abuja. Instead of looking forward to a bright future, they're in the mortuary

Lt. Lirfa Dashe was to wed last month. He'd bn in MNJTF since 2015. In March 2018, he was given off. 2 months later, in May, he was ordered back to frontlines. In July, he was killed in Jilli. He's 1 of 1,307 #Nigerian soldiers, victims of #BokoHaram buried in Maimalari Barracks
Lt. Lirfa Dashe was with the 22 Task Force Bgde of the 81 Div in Lagos. All that his family received was "a token 1-time payment from the 22nd Brigade equivalent to $140 & a #Nigerian flag." As the world mark(s) their Rememberance(s), let's not forget ppl like Lt. Dashe. #RIP
In the Great Wars of the colonial era, black soldiers were very expendable, their sacrifices air brushed from history & forgetable. It's not much changed - In #Nigeria's fights with insurgency, soldiers on the frontlines are still treated as expendable

Some of the core drivers of the religio-political violence in #Nigeria are failures to harmonise religious, political & civic impulses. I will try to summarise and discuss some of them here. #NotAnotherNigerian @QuilliamOrg
1. #Nigeria is a civic state, with much devout religious practice, mainly Christian and Muslim. Religious loyalty should not undermine civic loyalty, but sometimes does. Eg should Muslims be concerned about the 'ummah' & Christians about fellow believers only? #NotAnotherNigerian
2. The #Nigerian state apparatus, including the legal system, is heavily influenced by Britain. The Muslim areas used to have traditional Sharia, and were part of the Sokoto Caliphate. Sharia always had many interpretations: many of these were civic in nature. #NotAnotherNigerian

Dear @Areafada1 I am shocked to find that you also subscribe to this supremacist fallacy that is the bedrock of #Nigeria's woes. I refer to
your unreasoned induction that Igbos are the "most patriotic ethnic group in Nigeria today". While I have no problems praising your brethren
I wonder how you came to the conclusion that other ethnic groups in #Nigeria are not as patriotic as Igbos. Of course, this generalisation
