Tuesday, September 29, marks the celebration of World Heart Day, an annual observance that aims to shed light on cardiovascular diseases (CVD)—the world’s number one killer—and actions that individuals can take to prevent and control them.

Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, are the world’s leading cause of death, as they claim nearly 1.8 crore lives each year. They are also accountable for nearly half of all deaths that occur due to non-communicable diseases.

However, by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity, at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke can be avoided.

The #WorldHeartFederation intends to educate and unite people from all countries and backgrounds in the fight against the CVD, so as to drastically reduce the global disease burden and encourage heart-healthy living across the world.

Amid the ongoing #COVID19Pandemic, individuals suffering from cardiovascular conditions are truly faced with a double-edged threat.
#WorldHeartDay
Not only are they more at risk of developing severe forms of the viral disease, but the infectious nature of the coronavirus may also prevent them from seeking active, ongoing care for their hearts.

In such unprecedented times, the #pandemic has put a spotlight on the healthcare profession, national healthcare systems, and the responsibilities we hold for our own health and for the vulnerable in society.

Focusing on that very thought, the 2020 #WorldHeartDay campaign is asking the world to Use Heart To Beat Heartbreak.
#WorldHeartDay2020
The message urges everyone to:
- Use heart to make healthier dietary, behavioural choices
- Use heart to listen to your heart, get regular check-ups, and keep yourself healthy
- Use heart to help and support your loved ones and the society, especially the ones most vulnerable
- Use heart to influence positive changes in others for their heart health
- Use heart to thank the healthcare professionals
- Use heart to take part in this campaign and make #WorldHeartDay2020 more impactful than ever
