🔰Brief introduction to some of the resources in use by Unit 9900 in the IDF and the data collection methods used by Israel and analysed by this unit in order to highlight underground infrastructure and insurgent centres of gravity embedded in both rural and urban areas.
Drones- Chariot of Fire: This is a hyperspectral imaging system in use by IDF MALE drones such as the Eitan. Hyperspectral imaging is collected via sensing through narrow spectral bands and the data is used in the classification or identification of properties of objects.
Hyperspectral imaging is used in MASINT. The identification of properties of certain materials allows for methods such as geologic mineral mapping, which can assist with the tracking of underground activity such as soil and dirt spoil from bunker and rocket launcher construction.
Things such as crop growth monitoring and soil classification can assist with identifying underground storage and camouflaged sites. The sensor itself follows specific points of interest set out in the mission plan by operators, allowing large amounts of data to be gathered.
Satellites- electro-optical reconnaissance images: Ofek-16 operates an improved Elbit Systems "Jupiter Space" camera and is the latest of 6 satellites operated by Israel that collect high-resolution imagery. Ofek-16 has a high spectral resolution of up to 50cm from 600km away.
One of the main methods of monitoring terrain changes for things such as the establishment of weapons caches in locations such as forests or urban areas is by analysing IMINT. IDF soldiers with autism contribute to Unit 9900 due to their great visual and analytical abilities.
The collection of this data by Unit 9900 allows maps to be produced detailing hidden insurgent positions such as the sites in Lebanon where Hezbollah operates and subsequently assists in the creation of target banks for strikes in the event of armed conflict.
