I got a quick cut from my barber last week and convinced him to launch his own branded hair products... they have 70%+ margins.
In 10 min while I was in the chair we sourced everything needed to launch his line for under $500. It was a blast.
Lemme show you:👇
We ran w/ the pomade. The 4oz retails for $16, he buys it for $8, sells for $15.
First - the product itself.
We sourced a high quality base hair wax. He'll start w/ a small batch so we'll spend about $100 for 7 lbs.
That comes out to .57/oz, or $2.28/unit for the base.
Now we need to scent it. That means an essential oil blend. I'm not sure which he'll land on, but each jar will need a tiny little bit.
These are pure essential oils, so they're not cheap but it's way less than 1% blend depending on his preference.
We'll call this $.50/jar
Next up is packaging. He wanted to go with an amber glass jar and metal lid. No problem.
We sourced this jar at $.55 and the lid at $.31. This is at tiny quantities of 50 units - not bad.
$.86/unit for the container.
Next up is a label. He's gonna get this designed meeting basic FDA guidelines.
He could get some label stock and print color off for super cheap, or do an actual high quality label run.
It'll be like $.10 or OK, or $.20 ish for NICE labels which reqs at least a 1k order.
Now he's got all the raw materials for a small batch. He's jumping on Amazon and buying:
- Hot plate
- Handheld blender
- Thermometer
- Steel bowl
- Mixing / measuring stuff
That’s what he’ll use to mix n pour. It's science class at home let's go!
At home he's gonna bring the hair wax up to a temp where it's fluid... maybe 110. He'll dump in the correct amount of essential oil blend for scenting and use the handheld blender to completely emulsify (mix like crazy) the oils in.
Then he's gonna pour up and fill his jars.
Slap that label on and we're in business.
Here's his unit cost:
- Base Product: $2.28
- Scenting: $.50
- Jar + Lid: $.86
- Label: $.20
His total unit COGs are $3.84 on a tiny 50 unit batch.
He'll retail it at $15, and make $11.16 and change per jar.
70%+ margin.
Selling the other brand, he was making $7, and building someone else's brand.
Soon he’ll be building his, not to mention adding another revenue stream.
His site for reference - love his brand tbh and his shop is full of dope hand painted signage.

Recapping the startup costs for 50 units:
Base product: $112
EO Blend: $60
Jars: $27.50
Lids: $15.50
Labels: $200
Mixing gear: $80
>TOTAL: $495<
Costs less than $500 to launch this. LFG!
This'll be similar for almost anything in the personal care realm.
