I got a quick cut from my barber last week and convinced him to launch his own branded hair products... they have 70%+ margins.

In 10 min while I was in the chair we sourced everything needed to launch his line for under $500. It was a blast.

Lemme show you:👇
We ran w/ the pomade. The 4oz retails for $16, he buys it for $8, sells for $15.

First - the product itself.

We sourced a high quality base hair wax. He'll start w/ a small batch so we'll spend about $100 for 7 lbs.

That comes out to .57/oz, or $2.28/unit for the base.
Now we need to scent it. That means an essential oil blend. I'm not sure which he'll land on, but each jar will need a tiny little bit.

These are pure essential oils, so they're not cheap but it's way less than 1% blend depending on his preference.

We'll call this $.50/jar
Next up is packaging. He wanted to go with an amber glass jar and metal lid. No problem.

We sourced this jar at $.55 and the lid at $.31. This is at tiny quantities of 50 units - not bad.

$.86/unit for the container.
Next up is a label. He's gonna get this designed meeting basic FDA guidelines.

He could get some label stock and print color off for super cheap, or do an actual high quality label run.

It'll be like $.10 or OK, or $.20 ish for NICE labels which reqs at least a 1k order.
Now he's got all the raw materials for a small batch. He's jumping on Amazon and buying:

- Hot plate
- Handheld blender
- Thermometer
- Steel bowl
- Mixing / measuring stuff

That’s what he’ll use to mix n pour. It's science class at home let's go!
At home he's gonna bring the hair wax up to a temp where it's fluid... maybe 110. He'll dump in the correct amount of essential oil blend for scenting and use the handheld blender to completely emulsify (mix like crazy) the oils in.

Then he's gonna pour up and fill his jars.
Slap that label on and we're in business.

Here's his unit cost:
- Base Product: $2.28
- Scenting: $.50
- Jar + Lid: $.86
- Label: $.20

His total unit COGs are $3.84 on a tiny 50 unit batch.

He'll retail it at $15, and make $11.16 and change per jar.

70%+ margin.
Selling the other brand, he was making $7, and building someone else's brand.

Soon he’ll be building his, not to mention adding another revenue stream.

His site for reference - love his brand tbh and his shop is full of dope hand painted signage.

Recapping the startup costs for 50 units:

Base product: $112
EO Blend: $60
Jars: $27.50
Lids: $15.50
Labels: $200
Mixing gear: $80

>TOTAL: $495<

Costs less than $500 to launch this. LFG!

This'll be similar for almost anything in the personal care realm.
I tweet about building businesses and cannabis, follow me for more of this stuff and share this with any of your friends in the barber/salon/spa/gym business!

It's too easy, seriously.

RTs on the top Tweet much appreciated! 🙌🏼
TL;DR-

- Personal car products are easy to spin up
- You can go stock or customize em
- It's under $500 to launch a small batch
- Builders build!

6 years ago I left my job to start selling weed with my friends. In the first 18 mos we did $13.6M.

We got acquired, did some M&A, and went public in 2021.

Now it's come full circle- we bought the business back.

Here's what's next:
For background, LTRMN started in 2016 in Portland.

Like everywhere on the west coast weed has been decriminalized for years here, medical programs started in the 90's.

Some guys I grew up with rented a 800 sq ft garage and were flipping packs to dispensaries.

Wild West shit.
I left my job and partnered with them to build a business out of the hustle.

We knew if we had network of stores, we could sell-in anything, so we used bulk flower to build the distribution channel.

This concept is an important one: Distribution first, product second.

The 9 best books I read in 2022

(You won’t find these on any other list)

THREAD:
That’s because I read almost nothing but shipwreck stories and pirate biographies all year lmao.

James Clear doesn’t have shit on the life and times of Captain Henry Morgan.

Let's get into it, mate. 🏴‍☠️
In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex

This is a history of whaling and story of the boat (and whale) Moby Dick is based on. I just realized that A) there's a movie of it and B) Tommy Shelby is in it. Hitting this for NYE tbh.

The dust is starting to settle on this TikTok video:

• 4.2M views
• 974 orders
• $28k revenue

Here are a few takeaways:
My wife is finally over doing fulfillment lol. Been a long weekend.

With relatively low AOV our next move is to have manufacturer package the product all the way so that self fulfillment is literally print label and slap it on.

3PL costs just eat margin on a sub $30 product.
Basic email flows are the gift that keep on giving -

As the flood has cooled off abandonment and welcome flow triggers have kept 1600 new email subs engaged and circling back to buy.

Hundreds of 2 day delay abandonment emails just went out. :)

Golf is blowing up right now and golfers are brand loyal, spend $, and play the game for years.

Massive LTV in this niche.

Here's how I’d build a golf brand:
The pandemic was a catalyst for golf, but it just so happened to coincide with the gen pop of millennial dudes finding the sport.

When I was growing up I was surrounded by Gen X and Boomers at the golf course.

It's our turn now.

24.8M people played in 2020
Another 300k in 2021
It's truly a different landscape at the course these days and what's more.

In 2020 another 12M people did golf adjacent activities like driving range, Top Golf, etc.

It would be easy to write this off as a trend, but every golfer knows that golf isn’t a fad. Golf is for life.
