Know about Indigenous banana varieties of South India

- Banana a comfort fruit of many people and most favourite fruit too

- Plays major role in satisfying our daily dietary fiber , vitamin, mineral needs due to its easy accessibility and availability

A Small Thread 1/n

Banana is a farmer friendly crop where it has value from its leaves,stem,flower,fruit ,bark and even the fibres

Local varieties are easy to maintain & grow with least maintenance at suitable seasons

Banana trees are pest resistant due to phytochemical properties of the leaves

1.Sirumalai /Virupazkshi Variety

This will be so sweet in taste and small in size ,grown at the hilltop place called sirumalai near Dindugul,madurai,TN

this is highly nutritious bears naturally addictive aroma & soothing sweet taste
per siddha texts, it cures anxiety instantly

2.Poovan Variety

Most widely grown across tamilnadu can be found in everyone homes too

Has Scintillating yellow skin , when its fully ripened becomes dark in colour

This has ability to revitalize our body , used in treatment of male and female infertility by tribals

3. Sevvazhai / Red Banana
Thick skinned and bit harder variety of banana with pale pink pulp

This has more Vit C , Iron than the yellow variety , it will take 8-12 days for this banana to fully ripen at room tempaertature

Exported widely to abroad due to longer shelflife

4.Pacha Nadan /Greenish Variety

Mostly grown in tirunelveli belts where the river beds are more conducive to this variety

Thick skinned with greenish texture , this variety will develop black spots on themselves as they ripen

Has more potassium content than yellow

5.Peyan /Madal Vazhai

Thick skinned , will be ashy green when raw turn in to pale yellow once its ripened

this variety will release distinct aroma during ripening similar to chikku fruit

Used in treating piles ,mouth ulcer, colon disorders , acidity as it's reduces body heat

6.Monthan

A fatty member of poovan family , will be slight sour in nature

Helpful in , Nervous debility , Improves Cognitive ability due to higher Vit B-6

Cultivated mostly in trichy tanjore cauvery delta region even in many houses of those regions

7. KarpooraValli /Then Vazhai

Another widley grown variety at homes and fields

-Will taste like honey / sugar candy when its fully ripened , short sized with Semi thick skin will have a bulky pulp with seeds in them

-Useful for bone health & asthmatic friendly variety

8. Ney Pazham /Ghee variant

Widely found in tanjore cauvery delta belts as intercrop between coconut plantation

-Thick skinned with medium pulp , has distinct taste of fresh ghee when ripened

-wont sweet like others but has ability to cure mouth ulcers / body fatigue

9. Matti Pazham

GI of kanyakumari coastal region , short in size

will be saltish sweet in taste , good source of vit b1

used in alcohol deaddiction and treating anorexia by locals

10. Rasthali

Yellowish thick skinned bulky pulp variety will be more sweet in nature

has lesser nutrient value compared to all but widely used a white sugar substitute in puddings,naivedyas, sweets

has shorter shelf life darkens on ripening

Banana Export market in India is worth of ~700-1000crores which predominantly exported to middle east

Which are mostly non indigenous G9 /Morris Variety which cannot ripen naturally will need ethylene conditioning to ripen

Per Hindu tradition ,Plantain a tree is a symbol of joyful family ,trust ,value , growth and with standing relationship/blessings for generations

A must for any auspicious occasion , will not be complete without banana leaves& banana fruit

No wonder it has health benefits too
