Alfred Hitchcock & Vera Miles by Elliott Erwitt, 1956. Miles turns 83 today 🎂
"The only reason why Vera Miles never became a household name is because the man that intended to make her such, Alfred Hitchcock, demanded her complete loyalty and admiration."
- Jon James Miller
This is the elegant Vera Miles that I'm sure Hitchcock imagined for his films.

Instead, once Miles fell out of favour with Hitchcock, we got a frumpier (but still, of course, beautiful) version in Psycho, 1960. She was only there to fulfill her contract with Hitchcock.
Happier days for Hitch & Vera:

The obsession begins...
Vera Miles went her own way after Hitchcock. She's one of Five Branded Women in Martin Ritt's 1960 film. Jeanne Moreau, Barbara Bel Geddes, Carla Gravina and Silvana Mangano are the others.

Quite courageous for the time for an actress, from Hollywood at least, to take on a role like this.
