Theatrical Releases During 2022
1. #Sing2
Bigger adventure and slightly better sequel to get us teary-eyed and smiling at certain moments. Garth Jennings dig deeper on some main characters' personal journeys until "out-of-this-world" show in the end. You'll be sing along with them if you know those songs.
3.5/5
2. #HappyNewYear
Enchanting homage to love in luxury hotel's holiday season. Kwak Jae-young got typical 'K-drama' romance with expected sentimental moments. At least famous cast delivered good performances and very easy on the eye to create warm and fuzzy feel in our hearts
3.5/5
3. #Backstage
Second viewing was better experience for sure, also made me sing along in theatre. I perceived the plot and characters' decision even more. Love Sissy & Vanesha in their own brand as an actress. They showed us that love of a family is life's greatest blessing.
3.5/5
4. #TheIceRoad
Average old-fashioned thriller which relied on Neeson's aging charisma to kick some butt and get some action. While Jonathan Heinsleigh gave audience real feel for cold and being isolated in frozen weather, plot didn't really go anywhere from predictability.
2.5/5
5. #TillWeMeetAgain
As long as you can ignore early slapstick moments and some illogical plot holes, you'll be entertained by Giddens Ko's signature romantic drama with unique touch of fantasy, horror and thriller. Kai, Gingle, Vivian tied all the emotional strings handily.
3.5/5
6. #Scream
Fun slasher continuation which wasn't about thrill/suspense of getting stabbed anymore but more like guessing game itself. Bettinelli-Olpin & Gillett brought meta script and gory kills to the next level. Barrera & Campbell led each gens bravely to fight Ghostface
3.5/5
7. #PeterRabbit2
Unneccesary sequel which was slightly better than we think. Will Gluck really expanded the adventure with 'heist' that led to greater self-awareness especially for its animal characters. In the end it's still about family though got less exciting human story.
3/5
8. #The355
Vapid but fun espionage thriller. I wish Simon Kinberg could manage a lot tighter action sequences and clunkier dramatic moments. At least ensemble (diverse) female cast defined 'work together' with solid acts and energetic moves despite unbalanced screen presence.
3/5
9. #Copshop
Single-location battle royal you can give a shot though doesn't guarantee what it warrants. Joe Carnahan provided plenty of gunfire to thrill its audience. Louder was the most interesting character here. Butler & Grillo did just okay with some twists and turns.
2.5/5
10. #HauntedTales
Fairish Thai omnibus which talked about life-after-death in three horror stories. My most to least fave are Reborn, The Book of Truth, Haunted Car. Wish Suphakorn Riensuwan could've done more with creative twists and jump scares to avoid its predictability
2.5/5
11. #Belle
Staggeringly breathtaking anime with convoluted plot about fame and tragedy masked in digital modern era. Mamoru Hosoda presented interesting surreal cyberscape and beautiful pop songs over Suzu's relatable teenager personal journey you could easily attached to.
3.5/5
12. #NightmareAlley
Derisively bleak noir which felt long and kinda failed to maintain any urgency. Still GDT brought hypnotic visuals and spirited characters to drew us in. Both Cooper & Blanchett did extraordinarily well to define moral and greed in the most seductive ways.
3/5
13. #SpecialDelivery
Park Dae-min had complete package in sleek and efficient South Korean thriller with breakneck car chases and violent action sequences. Park So-dam delivered both soft-hearted and toughness in her performance to battle numeroes foes from start to finish.
3.5/5
14. #Antlers
Interesting but mundane atmospheric horror mystery with close-up shots of gruesome dead bodies. Scott Cooper started to pick up pace in final act and revealed 'wendigo' itself. Russell & Plemons' solid performances still got audience to sit through impatiently.
2.5/5
15. #ThePolicemansLineage
Wanted to like this crime drama but subdued plot and underdeveloped characters were quite inevitable. Lee Kyu-man actually brought riveting ethical question in perplexing narrative.
Anyhow Woo-sik as honest rookie cop got our sympathy to find justice
3/5
16. #TheAddamsFamily2
A sequel whose surprising/exciting moments are few and far between. Vernon & Tiernan threw a lot of things to keep the plot going which was not a good sign. This time it's all about Wednesday to deliver good message about family bonding and acceptance.
2.5/5
17. #Ava
B-movie with few exciting action sequences you've seen better. Tate Taylor failed to maximize many talents here because inconsistent pacing and lack of focus. Chastain still gave decent act as female assassin whose family problems and relationships took over her grit
2/5
18. #ProjectGemini
Russian sci-fi horror that felt weak in plot and character developments to make it a real mission for audience to care. Unfortunately tension and suspense quickly deflated into genre cliches as it went on. Serik Beyseu didn't provide exciting trojan either.
2/5
19. #BoiteNoire #BlackBox
Gripping French 'whistleblower' thriller with a lot of twist and turns. Yann Gozlan brought modern aviation issues and enough aircraft technical informations to make us sit through eye-opener investigation led by Niney's stellar nerdy performance.
3.5/5
20. #Moonfall
Pretty dumb but sporadically fun sci-fi action with cool title. Roland Emmerich used scientific inaccuracy and absurd real-life turnovers to make such rollercoaster ride. Aside Bradley, Berry & Wilson should be forgiven to take their role quite seriously here.
2.5/5
21. #Mary
Insufferably boring horror film at the sea. Michael Goi didn't seem to equip haunted boat tricks properly with cheap jump scares and reused ghost appearance. Oldman was too good to be wasted. Mortimer's confession in the beginning also ruined its surprise outcome.
1.5/5
22. #MyBossIsASerialKiller
Neither funny nor thrilling Thai comedy thriller with half-baked plot and limited character arcs. Pholdee & Prakaranan only managed to bring few chuckles early on through toxic working environment. The closing was too predictable and overstretched
1.5/5
23. #TheBeatlesGetBack #TheRooftopConcert
The most unforgettable 'one-hour plus' live-concert that took us back to The Beatles' era. Peter Jackson used split-screen effectively to capture natural reactions from audience. Each members lit up the screen with their own persona
3.5/5
24. #TheDoorman
Not the best single-location thriller but still watchable because most of Rose' fight sequences looked okay. RyΓ»hei Kitamura should've done better with its direction over clumsy dialogues and poor character arcs. Hennie tried hard not to be one-dimensional.
2.5/5
25. #DeathOnTheNile
Visually striking with all those landscape, beautiful settings and glamour costumes but became less of a mystery. Branagh did great as Poirot to list every characters' backgrounds and motives. It was quite fun seeing famous cast grasped their cheesy roles.
3/5
26. #MarryMe
Reminds me that i'm a sucker for romcoms. Kat Coiro took only lil time before jumped right into quick intro and cheesy plot you can easily guess the rest. J.Lo & Owen Wilson shared sweet bonds in the sense of modern dating culture. Catchy songs were fitting too
3.5/5
27. #Uncharted
Enjoyable fast-paced adventure romp based on video game. Ruben Fleischer gave a good amount of action, comedy, thrills and plot twists along the way. Aside nice chemistry, Holland & Wahlberg were cinematic gold to reignite our interest even for potential sequel
3/5
28. #RunHideFight
Just enjoy this action thriller for what it is despite 'cops are dumb af' and loose script with morality play. Kyle Rankin kept realistic characters and daily situations over well-paced survival story. May did convincing job as bad-ass 'out-of-nowhere' hero.
3/5
29. #PetiteMaman
Poignant and quiet French fantasy drama that subsequently connected the dots between grappling and bonding although CΓ©line Sciamma played with slow-footed ambiguity most of the times. Sanz twins and their act of innocence in daily manners won audience over.
3.5/5
30. #TheInnocents
Kids with superpowers who haven't truly understand how to use it seemed like an intriguing plot. Somehow i stop caring when one of 'em kills a cat without reason. Pacing was too slow and adult characters were too dumb to generate such well-crafted dilemma.
2.5/5
31. #GreatWhite
Wasn't awful but not ideal either. Setup plot and survival mode you've seen hundred times before in similar movie. Martin Wilson did just okay with CGI and shark shots to create few tense situations. Sadly poor characterizations couldn't make us care that much
2/5
32. #GretelAndHansel
Got potential to be groundbreaking fantasy horror but lack of compelling plot and story progression. Oz Perkins kinda chose style over substance to present such dark retelling. Lillis & Krige were good enough to guide us into some kind of odd feelings.
2.5/5
33. #GangubaiKathiawadi
Glorified prostitution at its best especially if you are more receptive and open-minded. Sanjay Leela Bhansali strikes again with great musical and cinematography. Alia sinks her teeth into challenging role and defines various stages of Gangu's life.
3.5/5
34. #TheBatman
Gritty noir crime mystery which manages to stand on its own. Matt Reeves found balance between great technical skills and crafty storytelling in the long run. Pattinson was finest choice to define vengeance and justice with Gotham City's every other characters.
4/5
35. #ParadiseHills
Strangely beautiful sci-fi dystopian thriller you would've appreciated more if it had better script. Instead of engrossing narrative, Alice Waddington focused too much on sets and visuals. Roberts & Jovovich did well to feed your curiosity till final act.
2.5/5
36. #TheProtege
Got mixed feeling about this old-fashioned crime thriller. Sure Martin Campbell had relegated himself to B-movies though still knew how to stage nice action scenes. Maggie Q delivers when it really counts over not-the-most-original plot and rampage killings.
2.5/5
37. #BachchhanPaandey
This quirky action comedy is both entertaining and exhausting. At times Farhad Samji seemed to copy Tarantino style but didn't move at a desired pace to build consistent narrative. Kriti performed well within character but Akshay was partially convincing
3/5
38. #Ambulance
A bit prolonged but still non-stop thriller that keep us on the edge-of-our-seat. This time Michael Bay seemed to care about character developments more than his typical frenetic action sequences. Jake-Yahya-Eiza get their shit together over chaotic situations.
3/5
39. #Umma
Kinda respected it as family drama which got well meaning story about intergenerational trauma. Somehow Iris K. Shim couldn't escape its stagnant storytelling and dreaded jump scares. At least Sandra Oh truly committed as sturdy Korean (mother/daughter) roles here
2.5/5
40. #RRR
SS Rajamouli's soul-stiRRRing comeback film that deserve to be seen on big screen. An epic tale with solid action sequences, cagey humor and emotional drama you shouldnβt question its logic. Jr NTR & Ram Charan gave high-spirited performances over marathon run time
3.5/5
41. #TheLostCity
Formulaic but comforting film which Brad Pitt (as extended cameo) started with a bang. Adam & Aaron Nee aptly combined romantic elements into ecstatic adventure. Bullock & Tatum formed great chemistry together and used self-enhancing humor for our pleasure.
3.5/5
42. #TheBadGuys
Fun and stylish animation with a high level of attention to detail. Despite foreseeable twists, Pierre Perifel brought character-driven plot works for all ages. Wolf and the gang made smooth transition to change habits while taught some valuable life-lessons
3.5/5
43. #Morbius
A standard run-of-the-mill Marvel film with mediocre script and lackluster direction. Daniel Espinosa failed to delve into richly detailed character stories and archs, even Blade/Underworld did better. Playing anti-hero is no easy task and Leto proved it right.
2.5/5
44. #SonicMovie2
Drags on a bit long though still a refinement on its prequel. Jeff Fowler established every characters into frenetic adventure for whole family. Carrey elevated his quirky villain mode. Knuckles & Tails were capably assembled with Sonic's heartfelt efforts
3.5/5
45. #TheContractor
Discouraging script definitely couldn't match Pine's encouraging efforts as a military discharge. Other decent cast were also wasted. Tarik Saleh did okay with some violent action sequences but we expected more emotional payoff and less predictable ending
2.5/5
46. #Antebellum
Competent drama about black people slavery but lacking substantial horror moments. Bush & Renz' directorial debut loads up on distressing imagery and violence. MonaΓ© was fairly good in her role and kept audience awake until silly appalling twists in the end.
2.5/5
47. #KGFChapter2
Slightly better because we barely had time to observe its sense and logic. Prashanth Neel upped the ante by expanding in many ways especially plotwise and action sequences. Yash's unapologetic gangster approach might trigger goosebumps in responsive audience.
3/5
48. #FantasticBeastsTheSecretsOfDumbledore
A scale up for the 'wizarding' franchise. David Yates brought more adventurous magical moments for almost every characters. Every cast did wonderful job to set up intriguing clash despite narrowly weaker action scenes and CGI works.
3/5
49. #Blacklight
Thought this one would be different. Oh dear, Neeson was left with no choice but to sign another 'family matters' kind of mindless thriller. Mark Williams offered few convincing action scenes though its paper-thin plot and characters didnβt really do it for me
2/5
50. #Cracked
Admittedly its twist could've been more ghastly. Surapong Plearnsang seemed to prioritize atmospheric horror and few scares in limited sets over compelling plot developments. Nichkhun & Pat tried best to define 'ignorance is a bliss' in underwritten characters.
2.5/5
51. #TheUnbearableWeightOfMassiveTalent
Gotta love Nic Cage to enjoy this. Tom Gormican used non-stop references to his career into a predictable action comedy with some noteworthy trust issues. Pascal made energetic companion to Cage's bizarre adventure in beautiful Majorca.
3/5
52. #Jersey
Heartwarming sports drama you could easily predict its plot outcome. Gowtan Tinnanuri played pain and dilemma cards very well over lengthy back-and-forth narrative. Shahid gave emotional performance especially in final match and closing moments. Ronit kid is cute.
3/5
53. #Dog
A rough cliche-ridden ride for typical human-animal relationship in a movie. While Lulu is awkwardly adorable, Tatum couldn't find his groove with acting and directing. Some random jokes and mood swings drag out the proceedings to heartfelt bonding moment in the end.
2/5
54. #KKNDiDesaPenari
Not your typical horror film but still a spellbinding movie watching experience based on @SimpleM81378523 creepy thread. Though characters became stale as it progressed, Awi Suryadi gave visual treat with great music to remind us about respecting customs.
3/5
55. #GaraGaraWarisan
One too many repetitive jokes and dramatic moments added unnecessary length to its heartfelt conclusion. At least Muhadkly Acho made worthy directorial debut. Ensemble cast were quite reliable to give insights about business problems and family conflicts.
3/5
56. #Kuntilanak3
Fantasy-folk horror we wouldn't ask but still appreciate its effort for different kind of entertainment. The plotline was quite familiar to many titles you've seen though storytelling was Rizal Mantovani's typical. Competent CGI works helped Dinda fight evil.
3/5
57. #Runway34
Less imaginative aviation courtroom drama brought down gripping airborne events in first half, mainly powered by vivid cinematography and great visual effects. Despite occasionally rough direction, Devgn as lead actor made pleasant landing to please his audience
3/5
58. #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness
As frightening as we thought cause Raimi played his cards right to deliver such morbid entertainment value. Despite its contrived plotting, Cumberbatch had deeply personal stake in this MCU addition.
Olsen owned it as fearsome enemy.
4/5
59. #Heropanti2
Another showcase sparkle for Tiger Shroff who often danced randomly between scenes. Ahmed Khan banked on its over-the-top action sequences with nonsensical plot and characters. Nawaz wasn't that good either. Catchy songs made up for pure mindless entertainment
2/5
60. #JayeshbhaiJordaar
Vapid social comedy with strong cast that could've been much better. Divyang Thakkar brought important issues like abortion and strongly-fortified misogyny over chaotic road trip. Ranveer's approach were both funny and sensible to deliver its message.
3/5
61. #FastAndFeelLove
A bit overstretched drama comedy in everyday-life exposure but Nawapol surely knew how to put yourself in his characters' shoes. Nat & Yaya defined challenges of becoming adults really well. Those movie references galore will draw laughs from film buffs
3.5/5
62. #Firestarter
Stodgy readaptation by Keith Thomas despite stayed true to Stephen King's source material. Its film score tried so hard to convince us that this was a horror movie. Felt Efron was a little miscast but Keira Armstrong was reasonable choice to ignite the anger.
2/5
63. #Memory
Forgettable remake with inconsistent pace though had so much potential. Martin Campbell couldn't even provide appealing action sequences, probably consider aging Neeson's skills. Every characters were underutilized and seemingly actors did these for paycheck only.
2/5
64. #TopGunMaverick
Long-awaited soaring sequel from Joseph Kosinski with great purposes for its plot and characters. New faces grabbed our attention in both ancienty-inducing moments and emotional sides. Cruise never lose sight of his role as mentor, lover and fighter here.
4/5
65. #Anek
Loses itself within parallelism of "what it means to be Indian". Anubhav Sinha's sheer authenticity brought social and political concerns but many of 'em were dreadfully disjointed. At least Ayushmann and newcomer Kevichusa tried something different for good reasons
2/5
66. #Jolt
Silly but fun action comedy for what it is. Tanya Wexler presented both violent and funny moments in the same extent supported by its talented cast. Fun to see beautiful and badass Beckinsale in unique character traits that sticks with audience from start to finish.
3/5
67. #TheRoundup
Bone-crushing action flick which makes us laugh while offering up regular jolts of adrenaline due to Sukku's rampage performance. Lee Sang-yong had great sound mixing that made Don Lee stand out as 'super-police'. Equally good sequel you wish would continue.
3.5/5
68. #NgeriNgeriSedap
Bene Dion placed strong emphasis on family relationships and kept us engaged with situational comedy and everyday subtleties. This heartwarming drama is very well cast as a whole particularly Tika & Wendy. One giant hug for everyone involved in making it.
4/5
69. #TheTwin
Quite a decent watch for slow-burn psychological horror though jump scares were lacking. Taneli Mustonen tried to put so many things into his own convoluted storytelling. Palmer's emotional performance still gave good example on how your brain copes with grief.
2.5/5
70. #TheAncestral
Family drama with interesting character studies and performances. Sadly Le Van Kiet seemed constantly change direction and made it quite confusing to follow. Supernatural elements reflected in trauma and sleep paralysis but its story didn't nicely hold up.
2.5/5
71. #JurassicWorldDominion
Ramp things up with more enticing action scenes and a wide variety of dinosaurs. Trevorrow divided its characters into different sets of conflicts and still kept us on edge of our seats. Old and new cast paid homage and teamed up for social impact
3.5/5
72. #Prithviraj
Legendary warrior Samrat Prithviraj truly deserved better than this uninspiredly monotonous period action drama. Chandraprakash Dwivedi spent years for research but didn't make compelling narrative. Despite few epic scenes in the end, Akshay was kinda miscast.
2/5
73. #Broker
Profound drama with mostly likeable characters. Kore-eda picked up scattered parts in first half before put his own signature bittersweet story about humanity. Awesome cast strongly formed a new-found family that will tear us apart. The ferris wheel scene tho π
3.5/5
74. #DoNotHesitate
This Dutch war drama in bleak 4:3 aspect ratio felt somewhat incomplete. I wish Shariff Korver could delve deeper into complexities of human nature. Three young soldiers raised interesting questions about innocence vs violence under difficult circumstances.
3/5
75. #GunpowderMilkshake
Derivative action thriller that cribs from all sorts of similar movies. Navot Papushado successfully staged a series of fluid, violent, stylized visuals to keep us interested. Gillan and all these women could be your favorite badass female protagonist.
3/5
76. #PeeNak3
A tired sequel with repetitive messages about karma we already get from previous movies. Phontaris just keep going through loud and lousy storytelling in various remote locations. Both old and new characters couldn't maximize its humor and horror elements either.
2/5
77. #SeeForMe
An effective little thriller with good use of certain innovative mobile apps. Randall Okta brought convenient plot for home-invasion standards though wasn't without its flaws. Kudos to Skyler Davenport who's blind in real life and gave sensible performance here.
3/5
78. #BhoolBhulaiyaa2
Competently made sequel though it was a slightly anticlimactic conclusion. Anees Bazmee nailed the horror-comedy balance and kept old-fashioned feel into its twisted stories. While Kartik & Kiara made on-screen chemistry, Tabu expertly played dual roles.
3/5
79. #TheBlackPhone
Offered little scares and thrills into its intricate storytelling though Scott Derrickson had powerful message about how to stand up for yourself.
Creepy Hawke is a bit underutilized, Thames & McGraw are up to the task in the perfect 70s nostalgic vibes
3.5/5
80. #JugJuggJeeyo
Two couples from different generations are trying to solve issues post marriage. While comedy parts didn't always work, Raj Mehta succeeded in dramatic moments. Anil-Neetu slightly outperformed Varun-Kiara and together kept this family entertainer purposeful
3/5
81. #Elvis
A must-see-on-big-screen biopic with magnetic visuals and energetic performances though Luhrmann couldn't keep up with same intensity in first hour coz he tried to cover some of most turbulent years in American history. Butler truly embodies charisma of The King.
3.5/5
82. #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce
Daniels auspiciously implemented parent-child (fam) typical issues into one hell of a show which were silly and sincere in equal measure. Those wildly multi-universe jumps might not be for everyone but Yeoh & Quan made the journey worthwhile
4/5
83. #Hatching
Haunting Finnish body-horror that'll keep you interested in its grim story and riveting metaphor. Hanna backed it up with pretty modern-day fairytale concept too. Though every characters were kinda fucked-up, they gave accurate sense of loneliness and longing.
3.5/5
84. #RashtraKavachOM
Mediocre action film with innocuous screenplay you couldn't care anymore as it progressed. Kapil Verma tried to bring mindblowing action sequences for silly reasons. I guess it would be more entertaining if Tiger filled the role to clash with his father
1.5/5
85. #Minions2 #TheRiseOfGru
Forcefully disorganized plot but this sequel guided easy entertainment for whole family. Kyle Balda had frequent moments of hilarity to laugh about. Gru's ambition and minions' innocence collide in fun adventure with some pop culture easter eggs.
3.5/5
86. #TheWitchPart2
I wasn't quite engaged with its convoluted new characters' stories but Park Hoon-jung didn't let us down with some purposely cute/cringey moments and gruesome kills. At least superhuman concepts in convincing world building will see another day in Part 3.
2.5/5
87. #LetTheWrongOneIn
Conor McMahon had twisted approach on vampire tropes with underline family problems. While CGI wasn't the best quality, its solid practical effects made up for it. Rice & Duffy formed such lovely brotherhood that you can cheer in this Irish horror comedy
3/5
88. #ThorLoveAndThunder
Pedestrian sequel which didn't add much to MCU altogether. Taika Waititi purposely offered interesting choice of 'colors'. While some of running jokes felt aimlessly, Thor & Jane brought heartfelt moments together. Bale gave a hammer-blow performance.
3/5
89. #TheMauritanian
Remarkable interpretation based on true-life case with harrowing montage. Somehow Kevin Macdonald gave too much 'defining' moments for multiple characters instead of gripping lawful proceedings we need to learn. Rahim did extraordinary to earn our sympathy
3/5
90. #DecisionToLeave
Slow-burn romantic thriller which Park Chan-wook's audacious directing made up for somewhat more subdued script. The mystery didn't truly take firm hold of me but i enjoyed every bit of Park & Tang's exquisite performances toward its imminent conclusion
3.5/5
91. #ShabaashMithu
Feel good sports drama about underdog stories we can relate. Srijit Mukherji couldn't avoid its clichΓ©-ridden but sincere childhood moments in first half was kinda hard to resist. Taapsee did all the cricket scores with her emotional actions and expressions
3/5
92. #SharkBait
Stupid yet watchable shark film you could predict its ending. Apart from lousy practical creature effects and attacks, James Nunn crafted nice camera works above and under water. Earl & Trueman gave decent performances across these not-so-likeable characters.
2.5/5
93. #GhostWriter2
As good as part one, Acho kept identical elements that led to a journey equal parts creepy and emotional. Saphira did well to enhanced Naya's more personal story in terms of 'acceptance'. Arfian & Sulaiman stole the show with their own comic-relief moments
3.5/5
