I really thought that with all the positive attention and accolades for #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce, that an essay written by a chinese-american on some very chinese parts of the movie might get some award recognition, but I guess it’s just not going to happen Image
awards are ultimately out of my control and it’s already an honor that my essay was a fund drive feature for STRANGE HORIZONS, and I appreciate that many people have told me it deepened their experience of the movie
I just wish it didn’t feel like another iteration of consuming the cultural output but not bothering to understand the people Image

So I was thinking about alternate realities in a multiverse

Thoughts in a thread đŸ§”

(Might contain spoilers for Everything Everywhere at once)
Alternate realities/parallel universes is based on de idea dat dere r an infinite number of universes out dere, each with its own set of physical laws n properties where anything can happen, from different historical events to completely new and different forms of life.
One popular theory of alternate realities is the multiverse theory in which dere are n infinite number of universes, each with its own unique properties. In some, the laws of physics may be completely different, allowing for the existence of different forms of matter n energy.

My most popular essay on menopause.

When you are shameless, you can't be shamed.

Few things are surrounded by more shame & silence than a cis woman who's no longer young, her vagina which is no longer wet, and her sex drive which isn't supposed to exist feministgiant.com/p/moisturize-y

If I thought I needed to be brave to write about my 2 abortions, it's next level courage to admit to being that cis woman who's no longer young, whose vagina is no longer wet,and whose sex drive isn't supposed to exist.

So here I am looking shame in the eye, daring it to test me
The Black lesbian poet and intellectual Audre Lorde famously told us “your silence will not protect you.”

Silence protects our oppressors. Silence fuels shame.

And of course @Twitter has slapped a "sensitive content" warning on my tweet. What's "sensitive" about what I wrote? A picture of Mona's first t...

Michelle Yeoh is brilliant. She long has been. She has deservedly been nominated for an Oscar for her role in #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce

No Asian woman has won Best Actress Oscar. Ponder on that.

She is exquisitely brilliant in this film!
feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me

How many films do you know that centre an Asian woman in her 50s?

As Michelle Yeoh puts it, “... an aging Asian immigrant woman. When was the last time you saw that, right?” npr.org/2022/04/08/109

#EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce has been nominated for 11 Oscars!!

Every time that glorious film is mentioned, I will always share my essay on how I believe it is the perfect analogy for the menopause transition.

feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me

I am 55yo. I can barely watch films or TV shows these days because they are about either high school students or people who are 31yo. Their dilemmas are so far in my past and the parents in the films or shows are too peripheral to the narrative to be worth my time.
High school students and 31yos are not helping me with peri/postmenopausal fuckery.

It is enough for me that Evelyn gets to beat people up AND have a breakdown of sorts because fuck, yes please! That was the essence of my perimenopause on any given day. feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me

That "critic who wrote about EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE as a metaphor for menopause" would be me! Thanks for headsup @SybyllaM feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me

#EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce is the perfect menopause allegory film. I don’t care if that’s not what The Daniels had in mind when they wrote and directed it. It’s art. It’s out there. And my menopause claims it! feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me

It is enough for me that Evelyn gets to beat people up AND have a breakdown of sorts because fuck, yes please! That was the essence of my perimenopause on any given day.

THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT PERIMENOPAUSE IS! It is everything, It is everywhere. And it is all at once.

"As time went by—I turned 60 last year—and I think all of you women understand this: As the days, years, numbers get bigger, the opportunities get smaller as well..." Congratulations, Michelle Yeoh #GoldenGlobes
Predictably, every award show, you get headlines like this: i.e. older women "looking good for their age." Headline: Golden Globes: Angela Bassett and Salma Hayek pro
I care more about older women winning awards and addressing the ageism that for too long kept them from the roles that brought them those much-deserved awards harpersbazaar.com/culture/film-t

2022 has been incredibly tough. Almost lost my life to pneumonia. I recovered only to be diagnosed with severe anxiety later. What happens when life gives you lemons? You write. You write your way through pain and angst, despair and darkness with hope that you will be okay.
You write with hope that eventually everything will fall into place. 2022 was about that hope. Summing up the year with a list of essays, thinkpieces and features I wrote on films for @firstpost. Also, wrote features on worklife - moonlighting, quiet quitting for @moneycontrolcom
In addition to writing on relationships for @Mint_Lounge and personal essays for other pubs.

Starting with movie of the year #Kantara. In this essay, I decoded the shrieks of Daiva which seemed scary at first but had a calming effect towards the end. bit.ly/3G2mryx

So glad to see #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce on so many nominations list.

One of my favourites this year.

I wrote about it here feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me

To see an Asian woman in her 50s ponder her other selves & the lives she could have had,is subversive. During a time when pandemic bigotry & violence in the U.S. targeted Asians, esp women & elders, a film that centres Asian woman in her 50s is subversive feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me

Talking of older women and subversive, disappointed that Good Luck To You, Leo Grande didn’t get more nominations so far. feministgiant.com/p/the-fuck-it-

I want a world where we congratulate each other on becoming postmenopausal. feministgiant.com/p/postmenopaus

You know that film Turning Red? I love it so much. I wish 11.5 year old Mona had it when she first got her period. Now, 55 and a quarter year old Mona wants a sequel about the mother's menopause transition

And you know that shit they say about cis women becoming "invisible" postmenopause?

Fuck that shit. First of all, "invisible" to who? I feel like running up to older women and yelling “I KNOW! I FUCKING KNOW!”

They are all I see! feministgiant.com/p/postmenopaus

“This is one of the reasons why I’m talking about it
There are very few women who’ve been in top positions in politics, but of those who have been, if you think about Angela Merkel, Hillary Clinton, Thatcher they must all have gone through this,” Nicola Sturgeon on #menopause
“And yet I can’t find anybody that has spoken about it and that would help me, I think, if I could go and hear or read somebody who had the same kind of anxieties that I have about the very public nature of the job.” feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-po

We are so excited every time someone shares a story of their experience watching our film with their families. Especially when the film leads to healing conversations. #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce
On the other hand, we’ve heard from many people, especially children of immigrants, who wish they could share the film with their parents, but aren’t sure how to start the conversation

(we get it, our film can be fucking weird).
So in honor of our film being available to watch at home, we asked the incredible Walter Chaw @mangiotto to help craft a simple message to help prepare your parents for the wild ride that is our film and place it in a context that might make more sense to them. Image
