Central to Alzheimer's pathology is a phenomenon known as brain hypometabolism. Let me explain better what that term means. 🧵 (1/25) #alzheimers #AD #neurotwitter
Brain hypometabolism refers to a state of reduced metabolic activity in the brain, characterized by a decreased uptake and utilization of glucose - the primary #energy source for brain cells. (2/25)
This disastrous metabolic slowdown is not just a mere lack of energy, although that would be devastating enough. It triggers a cascade of effects that impair neuronal function and disrupts communication between #brain cells. (3/25)

In order for ketogenic diets to be offered as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease and covered by insurance, several things would need to happen. (1/11)
First, large-scale clinical trials would need to be conducted to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of ketogenic diets for Alzheimer's disease. (2/11)
These trials would need to include diverse patient populations and be well-designed to control for confounding variables. (3/11)

Microcytic anemias, which affect all cell lines, can have adverse effects on brain and nervous system health. Iron deficiency #anemia, the most common type of microcytic anemia, can cause #cognitive impairment. 🧵(1/18)
Iron is crucial for #brain function, and its #deficiency can reduce #oxygen delivery to the brain, affecting #cognitive processes like #attention, #memory, and learning. (2/18)
#B12 deficiency, another common cause of microcytic anemia, can also damage the nervous system. (3/18)

Some of you with cognitive symptoms #brainfog have genetic differences that mean you cannot produce enough choline. 🧵(1/10)
If you have these genetics, to get enough choline, you would have to eat 8 eggs a day. And while some of you really love eggs and are into that, that won't work for many of us. So why is having these genetic differences a problem? (2/10)
Because choline is a precursor to acetylcholine. This is a major neurotransmitter that helps run the "rest and digest" part of your nervous system. It's used for sleep. (3/10)

Consider lead toxicity due to Ayurvedic medications in patients with unexplained abdominal pain

1. In the past 6 months, we saw 5 patients with unexplained abdominal pain associated with weakness of hands and feet. All were taking Ayurvedic medicines for various reasons.
2. Blood lead levels were high in all of them (>25 mcg/dl). There was no history of occupational lead exposure in any of them.
They were treated with d-penicillamine (chelation therapy). Ayurvedic medicines were stopped.
#MedTwitter #NeuroTwitter #ayurvedicmedicine
3. Abdominal pain resolved. Weakness of hands and legs partially improved. Four patients had anemia and one had kidney damage (these showed only partial improvement).

When you look back at things, they become clearer than when they actually happened. Irrfan always said, "You have a tendency to support the underdog, and hence we are together."

But now when the fog has cleared, and I can see everything without conditioning, I know it was destiny. We were meant to be together.

It was a hot summer afternoon in Delhi when I saw him for the first time.
A lanky, bespeckled young man in a black terry-cotton bellbottom and a light green printed shirt, with a leather sling bag from Rajasthan, walking towards the NSD lobby.

He was definitely not my type.

The effects of a ketogenic diet on immune function is one of the mechanisms by which it improves brain health. A healthy immune system protects the brain and reduces neuroinflammation. Brain immunology is a thing we don't talk about enough. 🧵
"...the present article encompasses several facets of ketogenic diet as an immunomodulator with respect to its expansive clinical applications."
In my Brain Fog Recovery Program, one of the lessons goes into some very basic brain immunology and discusses how chronic illness affects neuroinflammation, which then impairs vagus nerve function and digestion, and microbiome. It's all connected.

#music improves quality of life for people with #Dementia

1. Dementia caused by #Alzheimers disease is a relentlessly progressive #brain disease. Sufferers have #memory loss and impaired cognitive functions. Many require assistance for carrying out daily living activities.
2. People with dementia are often depressed and have poor quality of life.
Immediate recall and recent memory are the most affected in dementia, whereas remote memory is preserved until later stages.
Memory of music (especially their favorite ones) is also retained in many.
3. In a study, effects of music on #mood and quality of life of seniors suffering from dementia were assessed.
Over a period of 6 weeks, the seniors listened to their favorite music via headphones and an MP3 player for 20 minutes at a time three or four times a week.

In my 1st tweetorial, I’m happy to share our preprint—my first, first author manuscript! We used @10xGenomics single-nucleus RNA-seq in a mouse model of electroconvulsive seizures (ECS) to assess activity-regulated gene expression in hippocampal #neurons.…
Activity-regulated gene expression patterns in the #hippocampus regulate #plasticity, #learning, and #memory, and are linked to risk and treatment response for neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the cell type-specificity of these patterns is still not well characterized.
We sequenced a bunch of neuronal nuclei (15,990) from mouse hippocampus and used graph-based clustering and a priori marker genes to annotate these nuclei across all major hippocampal subregions and neuron types in both of our experimental conditions (Sham and ECS). Image

How a common nutritional deficiency turned an air hostess into a beggar
1. A few years ago, a smartly-dressed man entered my OPD with a shabbily-dressed woman, introducing her as his wife. Her hair was unkempt, clothes untidy and she wore a pair of torn sandals.
2. The gentleman further added: "She was an airhostess in a German airlines, whom I met while flying as I frequently flew to Germany for business. She was 25-yr old, pretty and it was love at first sight, culminating in #marriage. Things started to change within a few months."
3. She developed progressive #memory impairment, mostly for recent events. She had problems in calculation, speaking, and used to get lost in familiar places. One day, she left home to visit a well-known friend's place, but never reached there. She didn't return home either.

.@yermolenko_v Western colonialism was overseas, emphasized difference, RU colonialism was on land, and the domination was based on claim of sameness, "you are unable to be different", therefore focus on #memory, we are only in the beginning of analyzing this. #Ukraine
"dragging people down into the a state of sameness" also as theme for @peterpomeranzev , as illustrated by the cellars as a theme of war in Ukraine: in which people hide, survive; get tortured & killed; Russia has not been able to be deal with its own traumas & ends up repeating.

1/7 I am very excited to share that my book, ‘The Figure of the Witness in International Criminal Tribunals: Memory, Atrocities and Transitional Justice’ is officially published today with @routledge as part of the #TransitionalJustice book series.
@KentLawSchool @CeCIL_UniKent Image
2/7 The book explores how international criminal institutions, and their actors – legal counsels, judges, investigators, registrars – construct #witness identity and #memory, taking the #ICTR as a case study.
3/7 It constructs an original conceptual framework of witness memories, & conducts a discourse analysis of ICTR archive material relating to the underexplored ‘pre-trial’ stage to argue that witnessing must be understood as a contingent and multi-layered discursive process.
