Afghanistan rain/snow update. This is a major problem for the humanitarian emergency there. Not sure how much snow there is on the ground already, but by now there must be a lot. @UNReliefChief @UN_Spokesperson

#ExtremeWeather - #SaharaWaterTransport

@UNReliefChief @UN_Spokesperson The bits of Afghanistan which are receiving the most snow are those where the people are.

This is a forecast of additional snowfall from 14th through 17th January. (which excludes snow which has fallen since Christmas already on the ground).

The initial animation shows the last 24 hours as recorded by @MeteoBlue - this one shows the previous 24 hours.

The Taliban announced an emergency around the snow situation on January 6th immediately after the first #ExtremeWeather rain event in the Middle East (which is causing this). >> business-standard.com/article/intern…
On January 7th this report suggested 11 deaths >> orissapost.com/heavy-snowfall…

First satellite image here shows snow cover as of the 14th Jan (an unusually clear view), immediately before this latest extreme weather event.

2nd satellite image here shows picture January 5th, the day before the Taliban announced their emergency.

It seems highly probable there is another emergency now. Today's satellite imagery doesn't really help, as snow and cloud look very similar at this scale.

... meanwhile Russia also looks like it has a serious snow issue.
