So, the role of the report authors in the approval process is to guarantee that the summary is consistent with the underlying chapters and is scientifically robust.
The role of governments delegations is to ensure that statements are clear, unambiguous and understandable for policy makers.
This approval process with governments is useful, it establishes a common scientific foundation that all endorse. Political negotiations, eg within the UNFCCC – UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, can build on this common understanding of the scientific foundations.
