Thrilled to kick off our #AAPIHeritageMonth program with keynote speaker @chancellor_li from @UNOmaha to discuss the importance of community!

We are all from different families, cultures and backgrounds. The strength of an academic health center is in its diversity!

"This is a time of tragedy with recent hate crimes. This is also a time of opportunity. The more we can bring our communities together the better we can eliminate disparities. We are so lucky to have @chancellor_li's leadership!"

- Chancellor @jeffreypgold at #AAPIHeritageMonth

"With our 10,000 plus employees at @NebraskaMed, I am thrilled to celebrate #AAPIHM and to learn from our colleagues. Our culture is so important to our work in healthcare."

- @drjlinder CEO on the importance of diversity on our teams.

"I am excited to join today's discussion on #AAPIHeritageMonth. We have a chance to change the narrative. When people think Asian, they often think - Bruce Lee. But recent success matters. Recognize there are new #AAPI university presidents & leaders."

- @chancellor_li at @unmc

"When we celebrate diversity, it shouldn't be just 1 month. It should be every day. We are making strides in diversity, but we have a ways to go especially in senior leadership. Only 4 US chancellors are #AAPI women. We have a long way to go."

- @chancellor_li at #AAPIHM

"To truly honor inclusiveness, to truly celebrate our background, it takes all of us to not apologize for our culture. Our agenda is to bring diverse practices to communities. Our job is to share & explain. We must own our heritage and work together."

"I don't need to look like you to care about you."

- @chancellor_li at #AAPIHeritageMonth on the power of inclusion and bringing our whole selves to school and work.

"People make this assumption that #AAPI families are all well off - the so called model minority. But in fact, there is greater economic disparity within the AAPI community than any other group."

- Dr. Yun Saksena, Associate Dean, @unmc_cod #AAPIHM

"I have lived in 5 countries on 3 continents. I have experienced so many cultures, ethnicities, languages, people. As long as the color of our blood is red, we are all the same."

- Dr. Chandra Are, @UNMCCOM, at #AAPIHM @unmc @NebraskaMed

"Although the Indian American community is doing well as a whole economically, as recently as 1911 my community was described by a Congressional report as the 'least desirable.' Now, we are doing better but there is a way to go."

- Dr. Chandra Are at #AAPIHM @unmc @NebraskaMed

"We have to help each other. We have a good community - the Karen Society of Nebraska. We face challenges as well. "

Q: How does disaggregation matter in academia?

A: Dr. Are: the AAPI data is eye opening. What you showed about median household income for a family from Bangladesh vs. India. Some degree of disaggregation is needed, but we don't want to miss the forest for the trees.

"During COVID, we experienced some aggression. Some members of our Karen community experienced some bias - thrown rocks, etc. We believe that being inclusive matters so much. Sometimes, we are treated as foreigners. But we are refugees & citizens."

- James Knyawhtoo #AAPIHM

"When Asian medical school applicants are disaggregated, the majority of applicants identify as belonging to East Asian or South Asian ... SE Asian applicants—those who are Vietnamese, Cambodian, Indonesian, and Laotian, represent only 5% of all applicants."
