Meet Delilah, one of the starved down mares we rescued with her foal, from Thursday's auction. Thanks to the loving donations of wonderful people, (& NO thanks to the kill buyer who ran the bids up obscenely high 🤬), we were able to bring this poor mare & her 3 - 4 month old-

old colt, Bodie, home to our rescue.Delilah is skin & bones everywhere but her round belly, which is clearly full of worms. We have to be very careful with deworming her so we don't kill off too many worms at once and possibly lose Delilah. We have her on a re-feeding program-

where we feed her many small meals of alfalfa, tifton hay and complete feed nuggets around the clock. We can't overload her body with too much food at once; her digestive tract and her organscannot handle free choice hay like all the other rescue horses here at the ranch enjoy.-

Delilah has no milk for baby Bodie. We had to separate them where Delilah can receive what she needs and Bodie can have the free choice hay, milk replacer and foal feed he needs. They can see and touch each other. Bodie is with baby Lou, also about 4 months old. -

The two foals have been raised in the pasture together where they were born and they are doing very well together. When we rescue horses, we see many different temperaments and emotions. Many come to us understandably frightened and want nothing to do with us for a long while.-

Delilah may be unhandled, but to our pleasant surprise, she desperately wants us to help her and to show her love. On Saturday, Delilah placed her head onto Amber's shoulder and let out a big sigh. Here is a mare starved down and weak, who is completely covered in bite marks,-

scrapes, scars & whip marks that have left permanent scars..... she has every reason not to trust humans, but Delilah is choosing to trust us not to harm her. Her soft, kind eyes show concern, and a depth that has stories of trauma hidden within, that we believe would be too-

painful for us to hear. Her scarred body tells enough of her story. This mare brings tears to our eyes, we are overcome with emotion when with her. Oh how she has suffered.....We will do right by her. We will meet every need. We will give her all the love she has been without.-

To help us with Delilah's ongoing care costs, please consider a donation.
Thank you. ❤️
