Would you have guessed that this Coca Cola ad is 112 years-old?

Let's (digitally) crack open McClure's Magazine from May of 1910 and talk about it.

(thread!)

I was flipping through this magazine on @internetarchive and noticed that not only the Coca Cola ad, but lots of other ads feel more recent than 1910.

But lots of them feel like modern by style and VERY old by their contents:

Ignoring the prices on this one, I would have guessed 1970s from the styling on the hand and the SPENCERIAN font, but no!

60 years before!

Even on the ads that fit 1910 a little better (at least in my mind) it's a little eerie how many brands are still relevant today.

(There was also a Campbell's soup ad that I excluded for racist imagery reasons)

Two more recognizable brands:

What was advertised in 1910 that's not relevant today?

SO MUCH MEN'S SUMMER UNDERWEAR

Take a look in the back of the magazine to see ads for:

cars, guns, vacations, sanatoriums, typewriters, bicycles, malted milk, sock garters, rat bis-kits, candy, silk cravats, bathtubs, shredded wheat, talc powder, caskets, shoes and toilet paper

As with any written material that's 112 years-old. Some of it is fun to look at (see, this pipe ad).

Some of it is so offensive that I will not share it here. Browser beware!

A couple of bonus ads from the February 1910 edition:

(I swear some mattress ad on tv used basically that same graphic when I was a kid)

Thanks for reading!
