Assistant Vice Chancellor for Inclusion @SAStrongMD opens the @unmc @NebraskaMed session to #InvestinHer as we celebrate #WomeninMedicine Month! "It's a call to action to recruit, retain, promote & resource women in healthcare to succeed. And support re-entry for women as well."

"It has never been more important to dialogue on #WomeninMedicine. As I chair the @theNAMedicine section on wellness, women physicians are critical. Whether it is childcare, promotion, pay, etc. there are countless ways to do better."

- Chancellor & Provost @jeffreypgold

"We respect all women in healthcare from patients to healthcare professionals. When we have any session on diversity, equity and inclusion, we must lean into our discomfort for growth to occur. We can have different viewpoints and both can be true."

- @SAStrongMD #InvestInHer

"We are underinvesting in the people we have in our institutions. We have to do even more for our faculty & staff to retain them. It is a huge boon to not only them and the people around them, but also the ROI is huge."

- @JulieSilverMD #InvestinHer session at @unmc @NebraskaMed

Q: Why is the #InvestinHer campaign so important now?
A: @DrBrandyClarke: we are reaching a tipping point of critical need. For many years, we have done a good job for growth of women in the field. But it is not always equitable in leadership representation.

"We need to recognize and thank #WomeninMedicine who are doing so much and many are also balancing greater caregiving roles during the pandemic."

"2nd shift duties have piled up for women. That cost is in extra grants, leadership roles, & retention."

- @AlaskaChevy & @ADelizza

"Women only account for 18% of CEO's and 16% of deans in healthcare. That number is sliding in the pandemic. From the HR perspective, there is bias about working part time and resources are not keeping pace with real life demands."

- @sarahgloden Interim Assistant VC HR @unmc

"Having gone to a prestigious med school I was belittled by the best. It is getting somewhat better, but there is a long way to go."

- @AlaskaChevy #InvestInHer

"In surgery, there is a double standard for women. There is a pressure to be 'nice' and when they ask for instruments in the OR they can be seen as 'mean.' I learned to just tell people 'I am mean' and they laugh, but deal with it."

- @DrQuanLy Assoc Prof Surgery #InvestInHer

"The promotion standards often undervalue the important roles that #WomeninMedicine take in an academic department."

"We have a fear that change is lowering standards. But we are not truly valuing all of the things we are doing."

- @ADelizza & @DrBrandyClarke #InvestinHer

"The thing that holds us back is 'extra.' #WomeninMedicine often have to do 'extra' in the 2nd shift, in the department, etc. and that leaves them less time to do the important grant writing, leadership role, etc. that gets them promoted."

- @DrBrandyClarke #InvestinHer

"The expectation to be pleasant all the time is a double standard. Every time that a woman raises her voice, there is judgment that is different than men."

- @DrQuanLy Surgical Oncologist & Assoc Professor Surgery #InvestinHer #ILookLikeASurgeon

"When there is pushback about a woman being in charge, it can be triggering. It can distract us. It goes against a culture of safety and respect and the value of interprofessional teams. We need to communicate directly & hold ourselves accountable."
