Assistant Vice Chancellor for Inclusion @SAStrongMD opens the @unmc @NebraskaMed session to #InvestinHer as we celebrate #WomeninMedicine Month! "It's a call to action to recruit, retain, promote & resource women in healthcare to succeed. And support re-entry for women as well."
"It has never been more important to dialogue on #WomeninMedicine. As I chair the @theNAMedicine section on wellness, women physicians are critical. Whether it is childcare, promotion, pay, etc. there are countless ways to do better."

- Chancellor & Provost @jeffreypgold
"We respect all women in healthcare from patients to healthcare professionals. When we have any session on diversity, equity and inclusion, we must lean into our discomfort for growth to occur. We can have different viewpoints and both can be true."

- @SAStrongMD #InvestInHer
"We are underinvesting in the people we have in our institutions. We have to do even more for our faculty & staff to retain them. It is a huge boon to not only them and the people around them, but also the ROI is huge."

- @JulieSilverMD #InvestinHer session at @unmc @NebraskaMed
Q: Why is the #InvestinHer campaign so important now?
A: @DrBrandyClarke: we are reaching a tipping point of critical need. For many years, we have done a good job for growth of women in the field. But it is not always equitable in leadership representation.
"We need to recognize and thank #WomeninMedicine who are doing so much and many are also balancing greater caregiving roles during the pandemic."

"2nd shift duties have piled up for women. That cost is in extra grants, leadership roles, & retention."

- @AlaskaChevy & @ADelizza
"Women only account for 18% of CEO's and 16% of deans in healthcare. That number is sliding in the pandemic. From the HR perspective, there is bias about working part time and resources are not keeping pace with real life demands."

- @sarahgloden Interim Assistant VC HR @unmc
"Having gone to a prestigious med school I was belittled by the best. It is getting somewhat better, but there is a long way to go."

- @AlaskaChevy #InvestInHer
"In surgery, there is a double standard for women. There is a pressure to be 'nice' and when they ask for instruments in the OR they can be seen as 'mean.' I learned to just tell people 'I am mean' and they laugh, but deal with it."

- @DrQuanLy Assoc Prof Surgery #InvestInHer
"The promotion standards often undervalue the important roles that #WomeninMedicine take in an academic department."

"We have a fear that change is lowering standards. But we are not truly valuing all of the things we are doing."

- @ADelizza & @DrBrandyClarke #InvestinHer
"The thing that holds us back is 'extra.' #WomeninMedicine often have to do 'extra' in the 2nd shift, in the department, etc. and that leaves them less time to do the important grant writing, leadership role, etc. that gets them promoted."

- @DrBrandyClarke #InvestinHer
"The expectation to be pleasant all the time is a double standard. Every time that a woman raises her voice, there is judgment that is different than men."

- @DrQuanLy Surgical Oncologist & Assoc Professor Surgery #InvestinHer #ILookLikeASurgeon
"When there is pushback about a woman being in charge, it can be triggering. It can distract us. It goes against a culture of safety and respect and the value of interprofessional teams. We need to communicate directly & hold ourselves accountable."

- @sarahgloden #InvestinHer

"As we celebrate #AAPIHeritageMonth, the key word is 'belonging' for our patients, faculty, staff and students."

- Chancellor and Provost @jeffreypgold welcomes keynote @knguyenpoetry at @unmc @NebraskaMed for Asian American Heritage Month. Image
"Poetry and medicine are rarely mentioned in the same sentence, which is why I am so excited to join the two today. It is the art of taking what is unknowable and making it known."

- @knguyenpoetry, Vietnamese American award-winning poet and keynote for #AAPIHeritageMonth Image
"What makes narrative medicine so important is its emphasis on the literary arts. It boldly claims that an understanding of storytelling is necessary in medicine. It transforms a patient from symptom input to a real person who lives outside the diagnosis."

Appreciate attorney & stroke survivor, John Kindschuh, for his inspiring story! And PM&R chair, Dr Sam Bierner, for stroke best practices! Image
“My life changed overnight when I had a stroke at age 35. I was throwing up and went to the hospital - they thought I had vertigo. Then they noticed speech changes and I had a craniotomy and spent 2 weeks in the ICU.”

- John Kindschuh young stroke survivor at #UNMCPsychGR Image
“My stroke was in my cerebellum. It affects my speech & balance. I am able to understand things, read, write & have my memories. I focus on what I can do instead of what I can’t do. I learned to listen more.”

Thrilled to kick off our #AAPIHeritageMonth program with keynote speaker @chancellor_li from @UNOmaha to discuss the importance of community!

We are all from different families, cultures and backgrounds. The strength of an academic health center is in its diversity! Image
"This is a time of tragedy with recent hate crimes. This is also a time of opportunity. The more we can bring our communities together the better we can eliminate disparities. We are so lucky to have @chancellor_li's leadership!"

- Chancellor @jeffreypgold at #AAPIHeritageMonth Image
"With our 10,000 plus employees at @NebraskaMed, I am thrilled to celebrate #AAPIHM and to learn from our colleagues. Our culture is so important to our work in healthcare."

Thrilled to have @jack_turban discuss his cutting edge work on transgender youth at @unmcpsychiatry!

"Unfortunately, transgender youth experience a high rate of bullying and a high rate of psychiatric morbidity, especially anxiety & depression. This includes suicidal thoughts." ImageImage
"If you use the wrong pronouns, you might remind a transgender or gender diverse youth of a past invalidation from a parent, a bully, etc. If you use the wrong pronouns, just apologize. You are trying to be on their team."

- @jack_turban at #UNMCPsychGR Image
"If you are working with a kid who is transitioning, it's really important to work with the school and the community to ensure it is a safe environment."

"How do we show up as allies in the workplace? We are not going to mansplain for the next hour. We asked a lot of women on what their experience is when a male really shows up as an ally. Partnership is key."

- David Smith & Brad Johnson at @unmc Breakthrough Thinking Summit
"Women are not receiving the same level of support - including sponsorship."

- David Smith, @unmc Breakthrough Thinking Summit
"According to data from Boston Consulting Group, the participation of men as allies in gender equity was a huge predictor as to whether women felt their organization was making progress toward gender diversity."
