What is computational fluid dynamics(CFD), how does it work, and when was it used in F1?
Computational Fluid Dynamics, in other words, is a computer simulation of fluid behavior.
The program was created by Air Force and Aerospace engineers and debuted in Formula 1 in 1990.

It is now one of the most important elements for teams to develop cars, it is no less important than the wind tunnel, and it may become even more important in the future, due to its integration with artificial intelligence, which has become an integral part of the tools of F1.
2/8

There is a future plan that has not been implemented in which CFD will be the primary element after the wind tunnel is eliminated.
And if we look at this season, we will see things that happened for the first time at the level of the big teams,
3/8

due to budgets and wind tunnel hours being defined. For example, the Mercedes team used aerodynamic parts that were not tested in the air tunnel, but only on the CFD program,
4/8

and it was declared that the pieces met the requirements but were not tested in the air tunnel due to budget constraints and air tunnel hours.
Some may believe that CFD is only a computer program that is simulated,
5/8

but the truth is that it is possible to work on a computer design and simulate it, and it can also be linked to an air tunnel in order to calibrate the results and compare with the two results, and they are usually linked to artificial intelligence.
6/8

The data collected on the circuit is also linked through the sensors installed on the cars, where it is analyzed and compared to the results obtained by the CFD and the wind tunnel.

7/8

Now that we know what CFD is and how it is used in Formula 1, I'd like to ask you a question: Do you believe that in the near future, the wind tunnel pace in Formula 1 will be decommissioned and CFD will be sufficient?
