🧵big thread 1/25
Madagascar used to be a part of somalia when it was conquered by mogadishu and adal in the early middle ages.
And thats why its named after mogadishu
Somali history is deliberately being distorted and minimized‼️
Here is the truth👇 1/25
#somalia #mogadishu
2/25
Around the 10th century Mogadishu became a world famous port city and is clearly described by literally every traveler or historian from every nation around the world that has visited it or written about it, as the the biggest, richest and most powerful city in east africa.
3/25
The ivory & gold trade is one of the main reasons Mogadishu is so wealthy & there is clear consensus amongst african & western historians that the merchants of mogadishu r the first 2 arrive in sofala Mozambique with ships in search of gold & ivory in wich they find plenty.
4/25
I want to notice that this image below is the distance btwn sofala and Madagascar 👇 and the idea that somalis would travel 1000s of kilometres to obtain control of sofala but would not try 2 do the same with Madagascar wich is extremely close 2 sofala is highly unrealistic
5/25
The first time time anybody links Madagascar to mogadishu is the italian explorer marco polo who calls it magadeiscar ( wich will be corrupted into Madagascar) in wich he meant the somali port city mogadishu wich he called magadeiscar too. Many historians wondered why ??
6/25
One of the first documents written that might explain why marco polo called it magadeiscar ( mogadishu ) is in a book written on Madagascar in 1609 by jerome megiser in altenbourg, germany and is Called beschreibung der mechtigen und weitherhumblen insul madagascar.
7/25
In this 16th century german work, jerome megiser describes an event concerning Madagascar in wich the KINGS of mogadishu & adal (both in somalia ) went to the island of Madagascar with an army of 26 thousand men and conquered it and signed a treaty with the inhabitants👇
8/25
They made the inhabitants swear allegiance to the king of Mogadishu, clearly establishing sovereignty over them and that the island should be called nothing else but mogadishu! 👇 here is the actual german work on it from 1609👇 everybody can check this out for themselves.
9/25
This german work wich is an actual historical document and is in my opinion the most probable reason marco polo called the island magadeiscar (mogadishu) and any other suggestions, like he might have confused it with Mogadishu is mere speculation & has no historical backing
10/25
To even add to it john h. Van linschoten a dutch traveler born in 1581 who copied portuguese works and maps, confirms this event too where he says that madagascar has its name from makdishu ( mogadishu ) whose shayk invaded it👇
11/25
What is interesting is that John Van linschoten uses the term shayk when hé refers to the ruler of Mogadishu!
Wich is very accurate as ibn battuta’s documented travel to mogadishu in 1331 clearly states in mogadishu they call their ruler shayk👇👇
12/25
Mogadishu was heavily present in Madagascar and was trading with the inhabitants wich somalis were trying 2 convert 2 islam this is confirmed by the portuguese manuel barreto in 1654 where he requested 6 royal warships from 🇵🇹 to stop ships coming from mogadishu & brava
13/25
barreto, clearly states that Mogadishu and brava wich are both somali cities are not only trading there but are also spreading islam and are placing islamic sheikhs in multiple cities in madagascar in order to convert the inhabitants to islam against christianity👇
14/25
I want to add that this modus operandi is perfectly in line with how the somali sultanates operated back then and one clear example is the maldives where somalis would establish a trading post and would convert the inhabitants to islam in almost the exact same fashion.👇
15/25
And i also want to add that manuel barreto wanted to claim madagascar for 🇵🇹 and by this intent he requested for 6 royal warships from the king of 🇵🇹 to stop somali merchants from entering Madagascar. So there is a clear motive on why this history was being suppressed.
16/25
And on top of that mogadishu and adal were clear allies and there are many historical references of this, one is by the ethiopian emperor za’ra ya’ob in 1445 wich says that Mogadishu is allied with adal. Wich adds credibility to the 16th century german work.
17/25
There is more, Mogadishu is the main backer of the adal war in the 1500s wich mogadishu and adal are again allied against the ethiopians & portuguese and go on the offensive, here is actual academic work on the adal war 👇wich again confirms the Mogadishu & adal alliance👇
18/25
if anyone has any doubts about mogadishu or adal’s military capabilities back then its worth mentioning that mogadishu easily resisted a dozen attempts by the portuguese who failed to conquer it. at a time the portuguese were easily taking over big cities around the world.
19/25
adal fought one the biggest wars in africa in the 1500s against 🇪🇹 wich was one of the first wars in africa fought with firearms & fire artillery destroying the portuguese who fought under the command of cristavao da gama, son of famous vasco da gama, killing him in action
20/25
Mogadishu and adal both clearly had the military means to invade Madagascar and Mogadishu had the economic motives to do so. And one should consider that there is a clear consensus that mogadishu already established control over sofala wich is opposite of Madagascar.
21/25
The whole story on marco polo confusing madagascar for mogadishu is in light of all of these historical documents clearly false & has its roots in european colonial ambitions in africa.
to dismiss actual historical documents 4 mere speculations would be absolutely absurd
22/25
I want to add that if anyone tries to dismiss all of these historical documents b/c it favors somalis then why should anyone accept any historical document? I mean what should be the criteria? I provided actual historical documents and added additional proof to it!
23/25
And Its worth mentioning that all western historians upto the 1900s wrote and taught at universities in england & Germany that Madagascar got its name b/c mogadishu took control over it. And its only around the early 1900s they stopped teaching this, guess why ?
24/25
The reason Madagascar has its name is simply b/c it was a part of the mogadishu sultanate.
Marco polo didn’t make any error and again i have provided actual historal documents to back up my claim.
The story of marco polo mistaking it for mogadishu is literally made up.
25/25
Somali history does not fit into the narrative many racist western academics want to potray of africa of primitive people with zero knowledge of the world but somali history is full of geopolitical ambitions & world trade and military victories against european plunderers
