1/ #avgeek #aviation #airplanes #USAF - April 20, 2016: A quartet of Lockheed F-22 Raptors salute the OTD 100th Anniversary of the Lafayette Escadrille over the Lafayette Escadrille Monument, just west of Paris. The first squadrons to get the F-22... @Sylvia70485099 @kadonkey
@Sylvia70485099 @kadonkey 2/ were the 94th and 27th Fighter Squadrons. The 94th carries the Lafayette Escadrille's legacy, which is actually quite sad since it buried it. Here the French Air Force buzzes the same with some Mirage 2000s and a Rafale.
3/ The USAF's abandonment of the Lafayette Esacrille is truly disgraceful. France, however, honors the Lafayette Escadrille. Beyond the monument, the commemorative Dassault Mirage 2000 N, it actually has a Escadron de Chasse 2/4 La Fayette at BA 113. Merci, France!
@Armee_de_lair @USAFacts @USAFReserve @AFmuseum 4/ For the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Lafayette Escadrille, here two #USAF F-35s and two @Armee_de_lair (French Air Force) Rafales stealthfully overfly the Lafayette Escadrille Monument, May, 2021. 🇫🇷🇺🇸
@Armee_de_lair @USAFacts @USAFReserve @AFmuseum 5/ Feb. 1918: The Lafayette Escadrille becomes the USAS (now USAF) 103rd Aero Squadron↖️. Post WWI, it's disbanded. 94th Aero Squadron's Eddie Rickenbacker↗️ gets the 103rd's legacy transferred to the 94th↙️. The Sioux head is used instead of the Hat in the Ring↘️.
6/ In 1942, the 94th reverts to the Hat in the Ring but still retains the 103rd's legacy. The Lafayette Escadrille has never been reconstituted and is effectively forgotten, though it is America's first combat fighter squadron and first combat squadron of any kind.
