Sulla Bhatti was a Punjabi Muslim Rajput born on 23 July 1547. His father and grandfather were executed by Akbar for opposing a new land revenue scheme.
He was born 4 days after his father was executed by Mughal Emperor Akbar. When his mother Ladhi explained to him about the fate of his father and grandfather he turned a rebel against the emperor.
He stole from the rich and gave back to the poor. Folklore gave him legendary status for preventing girls from being abducted and sold as slaves.
He is believed to have rescued 2 girls Sundari and Mundri from Akbar who wanted them in his harem. He married them off on #Lohri with much pomp and festivity.
He was treacherously captured and hanged in Lahore on 1599. Akbar had hoped to make an example of him at the public execution but was Bhatti was steadfast in his resistance to the end. He instantly turned into a folk hero and is remembered every Lohri.
